On the Warner deal : We don't usually announce or talk about deals, and as far as we can tell, most of the buzz about this one started on various forums, not from anything we said. We'd love to have a working relationship with Warner, but at the moment there is no such thing as "the Warner deal." Once there is, and there are actual titles to announce, you can be sure we'll let you know.

I find that amusing considering Kirsten re-confirmed SubUrbia less than an hour ago! They probably don't want further leaks and risk pissing Warners off.

Have there been any rumors about a Criterion release of THE PAWNBROKER? Seems like a likely candidate if they're working on a Lumet. It's more well known than widely seen, it's only been released in R1 (as far as I can tell) in a bare-bones release, and a Criterion partner (Lionsgate) apparently now owns the rights.

i actually netflixed that a few weeks back and wasn't sure what to do with it. very good film, but left me and the wife looking at each other with kind of "huh?" looks on our faces. Ends up in that "glad I saw it...no need to see it again" category.

I'd rather we get a CC of The Hill or any number of other Lumet's before Pawnbroker...but that's just me

It looks like a director's cut of Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil is screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. I wasn't aware that an alternate cut of the film even existed. Could this be in advance of an upcoming Criterion release - the Ang Lee title that's been suggested?

I just now found out this is based on a novel by Daniel Woodrell...the Raymond Chandler of the Ozarks!

Warner's license expired and they apparently chose not to renew it. Someone has to keep a DVD of the film in print, so why not Criterion?

Has anyone asked about more Rossellini, specifically his films w/ Ingrid Bergman? That'd make a good box set

Complete and utter speculation here, but being a little familiar with the goings-on at Red, maker of the Red One camera on which both parts of Che were shot - is it possible that Soderbergh is redoing the transfer on the film using the latest RAW processing software? I don't want to make this too technical, but in short Red have continually improved the way their software processes footage, resulting in things like better dynamic range, less noise, better color rendition, nicer contrast, etc. Admittedly, part of it has to do with which "build" of the camera's firmware one shoots with (on Che, they were using ancient pre-release builds that have been greatly improved since) and can't be helped now, but my understanding is that even old footage will see some improvements from the new software (not to mention the benefit of post houses being more experienced with Red footage now). Such a retransfer of the film would probably be costly and I don't know if Soderbergh is even interested in revisiting it, but it's a thought.

While this is largely true, great art should awaken something in the perceptive that is unaware or dormant. In the argument of American film students being generally unimaginative or uninspired, I fully agree. Just think that this blanket statement needs a caveat.
