On the topic of Blu-Ray upgrades I'm just wondering, while I know MoC are a smaller operation, if some kind of a trade-in system like Criterion had/has* would be an option? As a proud owner of every one of your releases thus far I'd love to upgrade but it's hard to feel so happy about buying stuff a second time around. Especially in the case of Une Femme Mariée, which I pre-ordered and received but haven't actually watched yet. Knowing my version is soon to be made slightly obsolete isn't the happiest of feelings. I know it's quite perverse to not be ecstatic about quality films being released in better editions but some kind of a trade-in system would make me, and surely others, much more comfortable in egging you on.

If I knew it was just a case of sticking the disc and the cost of postage and upgrade (whatever that might be) in an envelope and getting a brand spanking new Blu-Ray back in a week I'd waste no time joining the chorus to upgrade, well, to upgrade everything :D .

*on that topic, does anyone happen to know if Criterion are still offering that trade-in deal? I'm presuming not but if it turned out they did it would change my packing criteria for my next trip to the US. After all, who needs clothes, right?

I know its kinda not fair to the DVD, but is there any chance the Blu Ray release will cover a wider array of Laloux's short films?

I hope a Chantal Akerman box is still in the works.

Don't know if this has already been discussed or whether it's still a secret. I'm just wondering what Epstein film(s) will be released? The Fall of the House of Usher is, of course, the one to die for, but there are others too...

Still no answer as to whether City Girl will be Blu only? I'd definitely buy the SD DVD.

We haven't any concrete plans for "Blu-ray only" at the moment, but we'd like to.

CITY GIRL will be DVD and BD.

Thanks for confirming, Nick. I also wanted to say that I think Manhunt is a nice addition to the series (I got the R1 when it came out but am now going to sell) since Fox probably weren't going to release it in Britain anytime soon. I thought it was a very good film and to now get it with a booklet on top of presumably the commentary was great news for me personally. I'd like to think that MoC and CC can step in and fill in the gaps when the studios with the exception of Sony no longer seem to be prepared to release the likes of Make Way For Tomorrow and other overlooked or neglected classics properly (i.e. non- ITunes and Archives-style DVD-Rs).

I wonder if spine #92 ends up being another Lang, since it's right between the Mabuse set and Man Hunt.

Certainly RANCHO NOTORIOUS deserves better than its got so far, and has my vote. The Optimum disc is so dreary looking I've not been able to sit through it all. And there was a 2-disc French edition of HOUSE BY THE RIVER that the Beaver said was far superior to the Kino disc - small wonder that! Hopefully the new, Peter Hyams version of BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT (with Michael Douglas, Jesse Metcalfe, Amber Tamblyn, Orlando Jones and Joel Moore - a true hodge-podge), with RKO still in the production credit mix, will prompt some kind of main line/tie-in disc release.

With Warner unceremoniously dumping the likes of The Mortal Storm, Confessions of a Nazi Spy etc into their Archives line, I beg Nick and MoC to consider picking some of these up for 2011 if Warner are willing to let these licences go for Region 2. This has surely got to be the most opportune time to try licencing neglected classics from the big studios; and not only would it raise MoC's profile even further, but I imagine these would sell well, too, especially when, unlike Manhunt and Daniel Webster, there'd be no R1 competition that's not already perfectly acceptable (not a criticism of MoC for releasing Manhunt and Webster under the MoC banner, I hasten to add: I bought the MoC Webster and actually consider it superior to the CC). You might even want to try again with Universal (if Make Way For Tomorrow is still a no-no or the allegedly upcoming Criterion edition makes it less appealing for you, I suggest going for Ruggles of Red Gap).

Warners simply won't licence anything.

FWIW, we've canned our MAN HUNT release. Long story.

Pity about Warner and Manhunt - I'm glad I held back on selling my R1 which I'd have made a loss on in any case, given for how little the title already goes on Amazon Marketplace. Does the cancellation of Manhunt mean that some other title may be moved forward to January?

I've noticed that the Eureka DVD of Fritz Lang's M is no longer available at Amazon. Does this mean that it's OOP and if so is an MOC version on the way a la the Mabuse set? As far as I'm aware M is the last Eureka Lang film yet to be given the MOC treatment.

I think they are preparing a blu-ray package! 8-)
Questions:
Nick, have you considered releasing Casanova on blu-ray? Can you licence the Carlotta edition for the UK?

Nick: when are you going to release Fritz Lang's SCARLET STREET? Considering it had an Eureka release, I've been waiting for it a long, long time.
