Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
I see no reason to expect that Che, Stagecoach, and Cronos are not all potential December releases. Unfortunately, I think that the one we most want in Blu will be the one not released in Blu. I imagine the AK box info and date is already posted on Image's site because Criterion likely isn't sending out sell sheets on it to retailers. If it's anything like the Essential Arthouse box, Criterion will forgo traditional brick and mortar retail channels.knives wrote:And CheFlike wrote: So we're assuming the only Dec release is the AK box? No surprises here but thought it's probably worth a mention :

Wow, Criterion has been on the ball with contemporary releases. I hope they release Revanche and Che soon.
Anyway, here is a list of upcoming contemporary CC releases, I'm very excited:
Che - Part 1 and 2 - Steven Soderbergh (2008)
Cronos – Guillermo Del Toro (1993)
Everlasting Moments - Jan Troell (2008)
Following – Christophe Nolan (1998)
Gomorrah - Matteo Garrone (2008)
Revanche - Götz Spielmann (2008)
Secret of the Grain – Abdellatif Kechiche (2007)
Still Walking - Hirokazu Koreeda (2008)
Summer Hours - Olivier Assayas (2008)
Y Tu Mama Tambien – Alfonso Cuaron (2001)
They are showing Still Walking in the Los Angeles area, I might catch that. Super excited about Y Tu Mama Tambien.

obviously they release the names of upcoming titles and rough dates on the 15th, but do they also release the artwork as well? or does that come in the following weeks?

Where in Los Angeles? It was playing at the Nuart last week, but for someone who doesn't drive, getting to the west side can be a bitch and a half. They're having a one time showing of it in Pasadena, but I have to work. It's also available on demand from Time Warner Cable, but I'd prefer watching it in the theater.marvinmeraz wrote:They are showing Still Walking in the Los Angeles area, I might catch that.

Most all artwork is released with the website announcement. It's actually only been recently that it's become a regular occurrence of the title and specs being put on the site without artwork.aox wrote:obviously they release the names of upcoming titles and rough dates on the 15th, but do they also release the artwork as well? or does that come in the following weeks?
Also, this morning I went to check the release date of the upcoming Golden Age of Television box set, and saw it in the proper place in the "Coming Soon" section. I was hoping they were updating the site early this morning but, alas, just checked and it seems to be back in its (wrong) spot at the top of the list.

OUT 1, anyone?
On the official Criterion Collection Facebook page, someone asked them:
On the official Criterion Collection Facebook page, someone asked them:
And Criterion said:Oh, Criterion Collection, I love you so. I would love you even more if you could release Jacques Rivette's Out1. It's only 12+ hours long... if you can do it for Fassbinder, you can do it for Rivette too! Speaking of lengthy masterpieces, ...you could do wonders for Kieslowski's Decalogue. Hinthint.
Please feel free to make a comment that you would like to see Out 1, to all of those here in the forum who would like to see Out 1 in the collection and who may not know of Criterion's Facebook page.Out 1 is definitely not out of the question. Anyone else want to chime in in favor?

Thanks for this. Also, it's hinted on their Facebook that Stagecoach will be coming to Blu-ray:justeleblanc wrote:OUT 1, anyone?

Person: is putting in a plug for the upcoming Stagecoach disc to be offered in Blu-ray. I know that economics dictate that you can't release everything in Blu, but c'mon...it's STAGECOACH!

Yes, I saw that on Facebook also...but I'm not certain whether or not it adds any degree of certainty to the speculation. The same Criterion poster (I'm assuming it's Mulvaney) said something similar in regard to Von Trier's Breaking the Waves...so who knows.

It's playing at the Laemmle in Beverly Hills, The Music Hall on Wilshire. (:The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote:Where in Los Angeles? Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
There was more ambiguity around the Out 1 reply ("not out of the question") than the Von Trier (which was more like "we'd like to, but..."), so I think it's not them appealing to a consumer's question like BtW as much as hinting at a possibility of a release. But that may be my delusions getting to me once again.Tribe wrote:Yes, I saw that on Facebook also...but I'm not certain whether or not it adds any degree of certainty to the speculation. Criterion will release a Rivette film the day Rivette makes a film under two and a half hours long. Hey, wait a minute...

Nope, they said Breaking the Waves wasn't on the agenda. They very rarely so a full out NO to a movie they like.Tribe wrote:Yes, I saw that on Facebook also...but I'm not certain whether or not it adds any degree of certainty to the speculation. Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
On Rivette's Out1:
In any event, these are far from a resounding no...although it's all just fodder for the speculation mill.
On Breaking the Waves:Out 1 is definitely not out of the question. Anyone else want to chime in in favor?
And just for the hell of it...on Monte Hellman's The Shootist and Ride In the Whirlwind:We'd love to work on this one, but it isn't in the schedule at the moment...
So...fairly consistent non-committal responses all around, particularly so in regard to the Hellman movies which I think had been touted as pretty much locks for being eventually released. If anything, in light of the response regarding The Shootist and Ride In the Whirlwind, perhaps we can read more into the response regarding Breaking the Waves than we ordinarily should.Love those movies. They aren't in the schedule at the moment, but we definitely do want to work on them.

As for the Hellman and von Trier comments, it's possible to read "not in the schedule" as "we've got it but don't know the release date yet". At least, I see those comments as more concrete than the 'any interest?' bone-toss re. Out 1.
And it's The Shooting, not The Shootist.

If they release Out 1, or any Rivette at this point really, I will buy it and all of the other announcements that day directly from their site in gratitude.
Too bad I don't have a facebook thingy to tell them that. Might use one of my friends accounts for that though. At least they acknowledge him though. Honestly the jokes of them not even being aware seemed possible before now.

According to an MoC twitter thingy, Beatrice Welles has sold the rights to Chimes at Midnight to the Dax foundation. So there may be some hope for a future Criterion release.

I went to a screening of Police, Adjective at toronto film festival, and in the reserved seating section was sitting a lady who said she writes liner notes for Criterion, and she was handing out business cards to the people who she was talking to, which had a big wacky C on it. Since the film is with IFC, I think this could hint at a Criterion release.

Am I the only person who hasn't actually seen any of Rivette's films but shares the opinion that Criterion needs to release them as soon as possible? Or is that the rest of you, too?

Also on the Criterion Facebook, someone asks about the possibility of a Fellini release on Blu-ray, and the response from the wacky C is that a classic Fellini Blu-ray should be announced in a month or so. Please make that 8 1/2, not Amarcord, please.
Edit: A Pedro Costa box set is also in the works, apparently.
