While you're reaching for the stars there, might as well hope it's in Blu-ray too.

 I just realized my mistake, and I do deserve the ribbing! It's awful, because Carol Lean and David Reed are two of my favorite Brit directors...

Random Speculation

#654 Post by milkcan »

Suggestion/Random Speculation: Big Time (1988), the Tom Waits concert film. They've done music/dance related releases before, and this film hasn't been available for some time. Waits is already familiar with Criterion, so a nice release of Big Time, with some music videos as extras, would be appropriate.

Yeah, Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter are great hip-hop movies.

Alfred Hitchcock: Signature Collection from Warners just went out of print. I wonder if they will rerelease the box without Foreign Correspondent like they did with the Wayne/Ford box without Stagecoach and Long Voyage Home.

Wha? I tried asking Peter Langs more details about the Caidin deal Criterion inked, he wouldn't name specific titles. I don't know about the titles Jeff listed but when I made my post I had just googled Caidin trust and picked out the titles that were repped by Castle Hill after getting confirmation that a caidin deal was in play from Peter.

Actually Mr. Caidin owned over 113 films through various companies, and what rights exist are held in a Private Trust. I was, and am, one of his Trustees. But that film information is only released as we become involved with something like the Criterion releases. Therefore, we prefer that the information is released as Criterion schedules it. Criterion does a great job and provides a good service to fans.

113 films eh? So what are the other 100 titles Stanley Caidin owned that aren't listed at the Castle Hill website? There might be some nice surprises instore! As for the Walter Wagner library. Peter said that Stanley Caidin didn't buy the whole library but cherry picked titles, which is why some of the films like Invasion of the Bodysnatchers are with Paramount/Republic now, or something like that.

If anyone has any good webfu skills and can find out what some of these other companies are and what films they own, would be great.

The Image Entertainment site is listing AK100 with a release date of 12/8/09. Not that I personally care that much. I hope that's not the end of the December releases. There's gotta be at least Stagecoach.

Criterion Please Rescue - Seance on a Wet Afternoon

#661 Post by zonk »

In the early sixties my brother and I saw some of the greatest black and white films, like Inherit the Wind, Birdman, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lillies Of the Field. This film, like Guns of Batasi with Attenborough is some of his best work. Unfortunately my DVD is a DISASTER. It has to be one of the most pitiful looking Janus transfers I have in my collection. I see picture shifting, splice jumps, maybe some sprocket wear. I don't know if I'm seeing a pan and scan film or what IMBd says the ratio is 1:66. So, is 1:66 widescreen because I can't remember. The sound seems to be alright from that period so I can't really complain. But maybe it can be improved. Let's just say the whole DAMN thing needs to be restored!!

Please, guys/girls, let me know if Criterion has any interest here, because I know you have your contacts and could put in a good word for this film. At least Attenborough and Stanley deserve it.

Rossellini War Trilogy

#662 Post by Davidspector »

New York Times's Fall season coverage reports the war trilogy as scheduled for November -- which seems to be incorrect but I think indicates a sooner rather than later actual release - perhaps December or January?

Very odd - the NYT appears to think, as of today, that Criterion is putting out the Rossellini war trilogy on November 17.

So at this point, it's safe to say their home video section is about as accurate as their news section.

Well, I remember NYT breaking the Rohmer date before we knew about the set, so it's within the realms of possibility I guess-- but a big title like that, we'd have seen whatever press release that author was working off of already

It would be a nice conclusion to an "okay" year.

Might it be a late announced Eclipse set? - it's possible the WAR TRILOGY materials are not up to full Criterion standards, and this is being released as a barebones set... Anyway we'll find out soon enough (even next week)...

It's going to be a full Criterion set. It was delayed for reasons beyond Criterion's control.

I hope this will be on blu-ray! In fact, I hope all Criterion releases in 2010 will be blu-ray too..."no film left behind" dammit! <grin>

I think we will get a second Rossellini box later in the year for the (Ingrid)Bergman-Rossellini films. This is speculation on my part ofcourse. (i.e. Europa '51, Voyage to Italy, Stomboli, etc...)

"Sorry but the NYTimes date for the Rossellini War Trilogy is not right -- it won't be out until January at soonest."

Hey, a tweet that's not "J Hoberman checks in on The Human Condition..." or something to that effect. But, of course, it's not good news, either.

Actually it was a reply tweet directed at me since I'd expressed my hopes that the NY Times article was accurate.

David, I'd be delighted with the 'full works' of a Criterion set for the WAR TRILOGY, let's hope it's sooner rather than later...

So we're assuming the only Dec release is the AK box? Frown.
