All-Region DVD and Blu-ray Player Advice

Thank you for this. I am going blu-ray one of these days, and since I haven't cared about regions for3 years or so, I really can't see myself starting again now. Will more expencive machines change region automatically, or are we still stuck with machines that need a manual change? Not that it matters that much, but if the difference is $ 40 or so, I might shell out the extra cash.

I actually went with Stegen to get the Pioneer BDP320, superb player, all region DVDs automatically and all region BRs as Nick says just by using the remote.
I also upgaded my amp to benefit from the HD sound capability, and I must say I am even more amazed by the difference it makes than for the picture quality.

The best and cheapest Universal DVD Player for me is Pioneer DV-610.

No, but I found 2 Momitsu clones, one in Yodobashi Camera, and one in Bic Camera

Is the Pioneer Bluray player Region-Free out of the box, or does it need some modification?

Also, I have read on a Japanese forum that the Pioneer 320 has problems playing PAL discs on a Japanese TV, encountering a black screen with audio only. I'm guessing this means that the 320 doesn't convert PAL to NTSC automatically?

No, not out of the box, has been modified by Stegen. From Stegen's website I took it thats its the US version of the player, but it plays PAL SD DVD fine.

Got mine direct from Oppo for quite a bit less than that!

So I asked the 2 stores which carry the "Momitsu 1.1 clones", and asked them if it was possible to buy one, test it out at home for picture quality and functions, and if I wasn't satisfied, to bring it back for a refund.

Got the same reply from both, that they can't give a refund for an item for that reason.
They both advised me to test it out at the store, whether bringing my own discs or playing in-store copies of movies, and they would hook it up to a TV for testing.

Wonder if I should bring the Momitsu region codes and see if they would work..... hmm

I just got one of the UK Momitsu clones and the quality is astonishingly good. Better than the PS3 and the codes work like a charm.

I watched 400 Blows last night, which I'd seen twice before and it was like watching a completely different film.

I've been the satisfied owner of a BDP-899 player for nearly four months, but this morning I encountered a problem. I booted a rental DVD of The Last Temptation of Christ into the player, and the darn player is stuck on loading the disc, with no way to eject it or anything.

Turn it off and then on again and IMMEDIATELY press the eject button. If this doesn't work, open the player and try to remove it yourself manually if possible.

I tried that several times, but the player immediately tries to load the disc, and it seems to freeze at the exact moment it begins. So no success. I'm also not really sure how to open the Momitsu manually, but if it comes down to it, I'll do what I have to do.

Whether or not and what kind of Blu-Ray player a person should buy seems to be a great idea for some kind of technical thread. For those of us quite happy with our disc player purchase, this thread takes too much time if what we really want to know about are upcoming new releases on Blu-Ray and/or discussions on the quality of recently reviewed discs.

I guess it is the in general part of the title that just seems too loose and might be better broken down into at least two groups. I know this place does make adjustments when technology takes a turn. This may be the time to think about one.

I was thinking about starting an Essential Region ABC (Region free) Blu-rays thread like the one poster did in the International DVD and Blu-ray Forum, but was worried it'd get merged with this thread.

For the record, I'm very happy with my new Philips BDP3000; it's cheap, user-friendly and multi-region for SD and for BD (when hacked; easily done).

Except for hardware mods, this unit cannot be unlocked for multiregion blu-ray purposes.

I can't find a reliable source on the net confirming this. I know this works for DVDs, but you admitted that you haven't tried playing multiregion BDs!!!
