It was announced yesterday... I doubt that new price cut will boost Blu-ray sales. It's not 2007 anymore and you can get a decent BD player a lot cheaper.

But the Playstation is more than a blu-ray player. It's a gaming station, media center and connects to wireless networks, which helps for easier downloads and updates. Cheap Blu-ray players need either direct connection or a $50 wireless antenna.

I am sure that we are all aware of what the PS3 is. But some people just want to play Blu-ray's and $ 299 for a Blu-ray player is just too expensive nowadays. If you are not going to play games or use the media center then there is little reason to consider the PS3.

Very clear instructions are included in the DIY package. Look for your insight to the region free mod kit instructions here.
Since I've taken up the bfi blu ray offer I guess I've gotta find something to play them on. Would opinion here say that this Oppo is the best bet for region free if you're in Europe?

While I don't have a region-free Blu-ray player, supposedly if you can get past a few of its quirks, the Momitsu is a good deal and $150 cheaper (you could put that money towards Blu-rays if you wanted to!).

With the "region-free" kit installed, does the OPPO play regular DVD's from any region and convert from PAL to NTSC internally?

The Oppo will be available in Europe shortly. There is a firmware mod which makes the player region-free for DVD playback, but you have to change the region each time for the blu-ray :x
Don't buy the Momitsu, buy this clone instead:
http://www.amazon.com/VisionQuest-VQM-1 ... 0027ZGJC4/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or if you are living in the UK the Tevion player sold in Aldi is the exact same player :P

Can't find any sites that will ship overseas.... TigerDirect says it will, but the cost for shipping was more than the player itself!

Am I the only one who would be apprehensive about voiding the warranty on an expensive BD player? These players are more complex than your old DVD players, and therefore also more likely to fail.

It's very tempting that no soldiering skills are required. Don't forget that Oppo is constantly updating and therefore improving their player, so if you want to be Region-free and not having outdated firmware, it's the only alternative solution.

So, after searching around today, found 2 Momitsu clones in Japan, at much lower prices. I'm just inches away from going Blu, but I guess I should ask,

What Region B-locked / Region C-locked essentials are there? We have a thread on "Recommended Non-R1 Titles" as a thread, where is a good list for Bluray?

I am not aware of any exclusive Region C titles. Also, many BFI blu-rays are Region-free, but living in Japan it may be cheaper importing titles from the UK.

Does the modified OPPO convert PAL to NTSC for standard DVD's?

The player shouldn't be supposed to do this, is your TV that handles the signal.

The Momitsu plays all regions, Blu Ray and Standard. And it converts PAL signal to NTSC. Very few monitors in USA manage PAL to NTSC conversion, hence one has to rely on the player to do this. Some players (like Momitsu) do this internally. Others require an external PAL-to-NTSC converter. My original question was, does OPPO do it internally? If not, most American users would need to buy a separate PAL-to-NTSC converter to see SD's from other regions.

I don't think the Momitsu can do something that the Oppo can't :P

Yes, you can set it to convert the signal if your monitor can't handle it natively.

Considering that you can get Panasonic BD60 for 195$, it's not worth it unless you want to be region-free.

I found a Momitsu Clone player at a store today, and it listed a lot of format discs that it COULDNT play, like BD-Rs and such. Can the Momitsu handle any type of disc? And what about the previously mentioned VisionQuest and others?

Yeah, I do want Blu-ray for the player to be region-free, and it appears that the BD60 can do this, but it requires a very difficult process that involves messing around with the microchips in the player and such that I don't want to get involved in.

Yes, it requires soldiering and they charge you quite a lot for this service.
The Oppo was an easy choice for me, as it costs in the UK the same with a modified version of the BD60. But in the US you can get a quality player for 200$, so it makes sense to buy a region-free player without spending much money.

Here's a thread on High Def Digest suggesting that the Momitsu and the VisionQuest are the same player.

When I do upgrade to Blu-ray, am I going to be missing out if I don't have the capability of Doly TrueHD and DTS-HD? I'm going to be putting the Blu-ray player in my room, and I'm guessing no, but just want to be sure. Furthermore, I'm only capable of displaying up to 1080i on my 32" screen, but since that is interlaced, I've been keeping at 720p. Will I be missing out on too very much if I don't get the full 1080p, because I've heard they're pretty hard to tell the difference and considering the LCD in my room isn't monumentally big, I don't think it will be too easy to tell the difference (and probably same with audio for that matter), but just want to be sure I'm not missing anything too much considering funds.
