I agree with Gregory...what potential market can this be targeted at (aside from libraries, I suppose)?

25 film box!?
Jiminy Christmas! This box is going to cost like 400 bucks. Let's hope that the 3 remaining films to be released in this box aren't exclusive to the set.

Don't even joke about that! I can't believe they'd do something like that.

You know, that's what everyone said about the Essential Arthouse boxset (including me) and it turned out be a big success for them.

Which is probably the only thing on that list I'm really looking forward to. Hope they can get them out before they go bankrupt because nobody buys that 25-disc-Kurosawa set...

I only have three AK from Criterion in my DVD collection so I will be interested in buying the boxset! :D

Nice to see Stagecoach confirmed (off the Warner goes into the pile of DVDs to be sold).

This is much more specialized than Essential Arthouse. But if it turns out well for Criterion and for people who've been meaning to take a deep plunge into Kurosawa's work, then I won't complain. And I don't think they'll make any films exclusive to the box, or at least not for long.

Great news about Underworld and Docks of New York - I've wanted to see these forever, although The Last Command would be an even more welcome surprise. Let's hope this 'sometime in 2010' business doesn't mean what it would mean if WB were saying it (i.e. 'sometime in...ah, how about never?')

I'd say we'll see it around the time hell freezes over.

Wait, so "Jon Mulvaney" is simply the name of Criterion's email account?

Can't believe they were that forthcoming, and happily surprised at confirmation of the releases I thought might be too good to be true (mainly Stagecoach and the possibility of the Chaplins).

I know, right? Not to be that guy but it seems CC is going to be coming up with another Ben Button or Monsoon Wedding every month from now on. But I will be positive and say I greatly look forward to the Sternbergs, even Revanche which I've wanted to see for a while.

Hmm. You would think that the Warner's Stagecoach disc would be out of print by now if they were losing the rights. Will be interesting to see if they license anything else from Castle Rock. I have been waiting for both America, America and I Married a Witch for years. Hopefully this is just the start of some nice releases to come...will certainly keep my eyes peeled for Castle Rock titles going out of print at the MMM database over the next few weeks.

Just a quick note - You have Downhill Racer listed as a Warners title in your article but it's actually from Paramount.

Everyone wants to cash in on the Streep love, it seems.

Only way to make this release worthwhile: some seriously comprehensive, Pinter-focused extras on it.

Revanche is excellent. I was a bit thrownoff by the poor subtitles on a character (she speaks broken Austrian) but otherwise it is a surprisingly good and even at times intelligent film. The second part is really what to watch for though.

Is the Stagecoach release necessary? I mean, the WB 2 disc release seems real good and it can be found under $10 in a lot of places. The Kurosawa set is going to be easily $400-$500, but unless is all Blu-ray, I'll stay with the current releases.

Hopefully, the Chaplin deal gets done. The ghosting issues in the region 1 releases is really distracting and takes away from the incredible restoration that was done to those films.

Yes, it is. The image quality difference will be tremendous because Criterion is using the UCLA restoration and Warner Bros. did not.

If Criterion are able to grab I Married a Witch from Castle Hill, it would make a great Clair release, if they included The Ghost Goes West as an extra feature in the supplements. The Ghost Goes West is one of those Korda titles that I don't really see Criterion releasing on it's own....but the two films would pair well together and make a nice release.
