It wouldn't surprise me if this ended up in the collection. This whole "Mumblecore" movement or genre seems to have some heat behind it. Swanberg, the Duplass Brothers, Andrew Bujalski, Aaron Katz and even Lynn Shelton have fairly sizable followings. In the mantra of keeping up with their mission statement of collecting important contemporary films, I wouldn't be shocked to seeKissing on the Mouth announced sometime in the near future. What do I know, though?jordof131 wrote:I just noticed that the Joe Swanberg film Kissing on the Mouth is now out of print and copies are going for over $50 on amazon, and Swanberg just did a top 10 list. Coincidence or something more?

Swanberg? A travesty of a mockery. Criterion releases one of his films and they run the risk of their office burning down... just saying.

Stop acting like a bunch of Pete Seeger's at Newport. This is what the kids nowadays know and watch. We have to be open to their ideas and tastes.

As another one of those kids, hell no. If this pans out, it will be the nadir of the collection.knives wrote:As one of those kids, no.

In all honesty I don't care if it's a part of the collection. Maybe I'll finally pick up Insomnia during the month it's released, but I do find that style to be terrible.
And I like Dylan acoustic or not.

Totally, the way he yells conveys so much more then that gibberish that Turner's pa talks in.

I still don't know who he is and never heard of that film. I also have no idea what "mumblecore" is. Am I already that old and out of touch?
EDIT: I'm referring to Swanberg, not Insomnia

It's a less talented version of Dogme with more 20-something angst punctuated with 'edgy' content or occasional sex scenes to add interest. (Though I do like Quiet City!)
EDIT: I'm referring to Mumblecore too

Agreed. Still better than Monsoon Wedding.justeleblanc wrote:Swanberg? A travesty of a mockery. Criterion releases one of his films and they run the risk of their office burning down... just saying.

I think both ultimately have their historical importance ala Armageddon, even though I won't pick up either. Well maybe Monsoon for my sister, but she'd like Howard's End better.Flike wrote:Agreed. What historical significance could "Armageddon" possibly have? I mean, it was made even after "Independance Day", not to speak of things like "Meteor" or the utterly hilarious but funny "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"...knives wrote: I think both ultimately have their historical importance ala Armageddon.
And I haven't heard of Swanberg either, but reading the reviews of "Kissing on the Mouth" at imdb it almost looks as if it's a prime candidate for worst movie ever made...

You can watch Swanberg's web series "Young American Bodies" for free online. It's basically "Real World: The Porno."
As for mumblecore, I really liked Andrew Bujalski's Mutual Appreciation. And HVE released Mutual Appreciation.

I watched the first couple of episodes of this a couple of weeks ago. If that's representative of Swanberg's body of work, I want nothing to do with it.justeleblanc wrote:You can watch Swanberg's web series "Young American Bodies" for free online. It's basically "Real World: The Porno."

Today when people think big dumb action blockbuster of the 90s they don't think Emmerich (the closest comparison) but Bay. Him and the rest of the Bruckheimer croonies are that bad space of time, the best of which is Probably the Rock and the dumbest being ArmageddonTommaso wrote:What historical significance could "Armageddon" possibly have? I have a soft spot for Bad Boys II, also. Wait, what?
Also, Joe says there isn't a Criterion on the way. Just a case of the distributor going out of business and the film probably won't be released on DVD again.

I wouldn't have a big problem with criterion putting out Kissing On The Mouth i've never seen it but i've enjoyed the other mumblecore films i've seen (Quiet City, Mutual Appreciation, and The Puffy Chair)
