Any chance Criterion will be releasing Spike Lee's Kobe: Doin' Work?

Since this is the only way they'd ever release a new transfer what are the chances of the Orphic trilogy going Blu?

Cinephrenic wrote:What you guys think Criterion will do with the remaining Imamura as they said a Eclipse set will come sometime?

Early Imamura (all Nikkatsu titles)
Stolen Desire
Nishi Ginza Station
Endless Desire
My Second Brother

The Profound Desire of the Gods (main line?)

They also have Eijanaika. I don't know if it could be a mainline title, I haven't seen it.
Both Eijanaika and The Profound Desire of the Gods are worthy to be released mainline. Each is a large-scale, multi-plotted production that dramatically showcases Imamura's energetic use of vivid hues and colors, which nearly seem to burst off the screen.

As for an Eclipse set, as I've seen only two of the four listed, it's a bit of challenge to say what might fit together or not. Stolen Desire and My Second Brother pair well, as both are set in rustic Tohoku and feature stories of village life. Endless Desire, which I haven't seen, could be included with them, I guess, as it too is a drama. Only Nishi Ginza Station, also unviewed, seems out of place as it tends toward the musical/comedy genre. But bundling all four together and labeling the set "Early Imamura" is workable, I imagine.

Although I'm not a particularly big fan of films that feature children as protagonists, the delightfully charming Nianchan, or My Second Brother, was surprisingly an exception. Sibling rivalry is a staple of cinema, but its opposite, sibling bonding, isn't all that common. For those who have patience as Imamura grinds the story out, Nianchan can be particularly rewarding.

I think I'd prefer an Eclipse of his "documentary" work including A MAN VANISHES, HISTORY OF POSTWAR JAPAN AS TOLD BY A BAR HOSTESS, KARAYUKI-SAN, and something from his TV work. Maybe IN SEARCH OF UNRETURNED SOLDIERS? THE PIRATES OF BUBUAN?

So tomorrow around dinner time (east coast) we should be able to see some more releases on the website?

What are they supposed to be releasing next, anyway?

Per the NYT, Wings of Desire will be out September 8. Possibly other Wenders as well.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Paris, Texas along with (Wings of Desire). Something unexpected would be nice, like the second Brakhage anthology.

Followed by complaining around dessert.

My predictions:

Wings Of Desire
Howard's End
Che
Ride With The Devil
HerrSchreck's Head Exploding

Ok, but seriously:

Wings Of Desire
Howard's End
Dillinger Is Dead
Revanche

My predictions:

Brakhage -- The complete collection all 400+ films on 15 blurays
Hart of London (extras include the complete Chambers short films)
Walkabout -- remastered bluray
Numero Deux

An eclipse boxset of Robbe-Grillet's films

I'll be disappointed if these aren't the announcements as I'm ready to preorder them.

And don't forget a Rivette box set.

MY PREDICTIONS:

Wings of Desire (behind schedule on this on)
Senso
Cronos (I suspect one Focus title per month from now on)
Pasolini Box
--No Eclipse--

Though I was thinking of anyone would think a Joan of Arc theme month (like the samurai month) would ever happen, featuring the Rossellini, Rivette, Bresson, and Preminger renditions. It certainly wont happen in June, but MAN would that be a great way to get people to buy all four releases!

Don't give up! Fight the good fight!

I'm going to continue to hope for The Cook... and Dillinger is Dead, though I sort of suspect Dillinger will be a December title.

The idea of Saint Joan finally getting a good release ultimately makes me ache with sadness that it will never happen

Why is everyone convinced Dillinger is Dead will be released before the year is out? Isn't it still circulating US theaters? I thought the routine was a DVD release 9-12 months after the first theatrical run (barring Vivre sie Vie of course).

Either way, I predict a Paris, Texas DVD to complement the much anticipated WoD disc(s), either Cronos or Che (one will be September, one October most likely) and.....I really don't know, to be honest. Hopefully we'll get a nice surprise.

All the Kreskins shouldn't forget that the NY Times had That Hamilton Woman as coming in September also. Traditionally, September is the month when Criterion really ups its game so expectations should be high.

All fine, but I wished they would give us a surprise for a change. Renoir, for instance; it's been three years now (I think) when we last saw something by him added to the collection.

Wow, did not even realize this was a SEPTEMBER announcement, I guess August is just that unspectacular and I own the SD of both Kagemusha and Playtime. Lame. August was amazing last year, SALOOOOOO.

It also seems that they had much better packaging on releases last year, Mishima, Furies, Vampyr, Patriotism, Madame de all within 2 or 3 months.

This year Marienbad, Last Metro, and In the Realm have all looked great, but everything else has been so so. The original Science of Fiction packaging looked badass though, too bad they didnt follow through.

The Blu of Playtime might be one of the more exciting releases this year.

Agreed. Watching the blu ray of Playtime on a projection screen will be glorious!
