Funny, I'd just discovered that clip a few weeks ago via the WFMU blog, but it never would've struck me as something Criterion might release.

If Criterion were to release anything previewed on Beware of the Blog, I'd prefer it be this (NSFW)Gregory wrote:Funny, I'd just discovered that clip a few weeks ago via the WFMU blog, but it never would've struck me as something Criterion might release.

Hausu is fantastic genre film. On one hand I'm surprised Criterion is touching it, but not disappointed.
As far as a horror film goes, I see it no different than Criterion touching Evil Dead II or Brain Dead or some other gonzo horror, and even those comparisons don't do justice to the film's avant-garde qualities.

All the updates on Criterion releasing Hausu is that they're just sitting on the release.
That aside, if you go to the youtube clip posted above I think you can find the video link to the piano eating scene.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
The OOP DVD list was updated today and I noticed that the MGM disc of Mystery Train has went OOP. Doesn't Jarmusch own all of his own films? I've heard that before. If that is indeed accurate, I'm sure it will be sooner rather than later that Mystery Train is added to Criterion's holdings like Night On Earth, Stranger than Paradise. (Both of which were previously also at MGM I think?!?)
Just thought it would be an interesting bit of speculation.

I'd hope. I love Mystery Train, and it could definitely use an image upgrade, as well as Jarmusch answering more questions.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
As domino has mentioned previously, tons of MGM titles have been going OOP as of late, but I would absolutely not be surprised if Criterion jumped on Mystery Train given their established relationship with Jarmusch, as CC did with the formerly MGM-controlled Stranger Than Paradise (it would coincide nicely with Down by Law on Blu-Ray, too).

Mystery Train would be a great addition. I would also love to see Dead Man as well.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Normally I would not assume that just because a disc goes out of print at MGM that means a Criterion is in the works but if Jarmusch does own the rights to his film, it would likely mean the rights have reverted back to him and he can do what he wants with the film. Both Stranger than Paradise and Night on Earth had previously been controlled by studios but were licensed directly from Jarmusch for the Criterions and had Janus logos in front of them. Unless Mystery Train isn't controlled by Jarmusch himself...I don't see why he wouldn't bring the film to Criterion considering their relationship.

Warners really let East of Eden and the Philadelphia Story go OOP?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Amazon has two different listings for East of Eden (2 disc) and two different listings for Philadelphia Story (2 disc). Each has one that's been discontinued and one that's in print but the listings look identical. It's likely they just changed the UPC code on the sets or something small like that. Kind of like Criterion's "rerelease" of Traffic. Both are still available. Mystery Train is on backorder on Amazon. Doubt they'll get anymore copies. That one's gone for good. I think they changed digipack to the regular case.

No, neither film has even been available in a digipak. I know The Philadelphia Story originally had a slipcase, though, so maybe that is the change. Don't know about EofE.Ashirg wrote:I think they changed digipack to the regular case.

East of Eden definitely had a slipcase, as did Rebel and Giant. Some cover art on the slip case.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Both East of Eden and Philadelphia Story are in those TCM/Warner 4 packs. The Phialdelphia Story is in a comedt pack with I believe Bringing Up Baby, Adam's Rib and I want to say Woman of the Year. East of Eden is grouped with Rebel Without a Cause, Streetcar Named Desire and one other. Even though disc two isn't included you still get the extras from disc one. They're only like 20 bucks which is excellent!

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
considering the way they spread out auteurs by about a year between releases, any chance we'll get Life of Oharu or The Only Son in September or October as an 'unexpected' surprise?

I'm glad you all enjoyed it! I made that video almost two years ago, and it sat on my blog without much notice, so I posted it again, this time uploading it to youtube.

Does that mean Howard's End will move over to the CC? I think that was part of the voting gig, but I can't remember.Jun-Dai wrote:I guess Howards End won?
