Obviously it's part of the Merchant Ivory line but I just don't see them slapping a spine number and wacky-C on a blu-ray edition of Howard's End and not making it available in SD as well with spine and Wacky-C. As we've seen over the last two years, Criterion has discovered the financial rewards of the double-dip.

I'm guessing that sales on the Merchant Ivory collection have long since peaked and moving Howard's End over to the mainline is just a way to reinvigorate sales on the title. If sales spike with a wacky C, I'm sure other Merchant Ivory titles will follow.

Don't you think Blu sales would be higher if casual Criterion consumers thought it was some sort of "Blu exclusive" even if it turns out to just be a HD port of the MI disc? I mean, I'd guess that even a good section of the posters here have no idea about the Merchant Ivory line's existence

I debated on putting them up somewhere on this site to make people aware of them (they are nice) but the fact I really hate those films always made them a lower priority.

If I recall, though, they were supposed to be released under the Criterion brand but Ivory wanted the Merchant/Ivory brand to be more prominent on the releases.

August looks like a bad month once again. The only good title is the Jeanne Dielman film and thats about it.

I'm surprised that Vivrie Va Sie isn't coming out soon, it went on tour earlier than "2 or 3 things I know about her" and " Made in USA" and the poster came out early, also, it is his finest work, why is Criterion taking so long?

Hopefully so they can give us the best release possible. I've been anticipating its release for up to three years now and cannot wait to see the extras they've found. It really stands as Godard's best work for me, in terms of films made pre-Weekend. Le Mepris might be my favorite of the New Wave period, but Vivre Va Sie is an undeniable masterpiece--and one that deserves an excellent Criterion release.

Because they don't want to flood the release schedule with a single director.

The Eclipse looks nice no doubt, but...cough cough, as I was saying...

More Nikkatsu sets for sure. My sources tell me these are what is in the works and perhaps more:

Crimson Pistol - Yoichi Ushihara
Dirty Work - Buichi Saito
Fast-Draw Guy - Takashi Nomura
Gangster VIP - Toshio Masuda (may have changed)
Plains Wanderer - Buichi Saito
The Velvet Hustler - Toshio Masuda

plus The Weird Love Makers - Koreyoshi Kurahara (I haven't added yet)

Perhaps a "youth gone wild" Eclipse set with The Weird Love Makers, Cruel Story of Youth, The Sun's Burial

Is Play Time more confirmed than Ran or Contempt? I already got burned selling my SD copies of those.

Anybody want an Eclipse set of the best of those Japanese 50s ghost movies that were released on Greek DVDs? For my money, they would look just as good as Nikkatsu noirs in the Eclipse line.

Unfortunately re. CONTEMPT...

No, but it's entirely possible they might make another announcement late this afternoon.

If in fact Criterion released this, it would be uncut.

I have a feeling something else is going to be announced for August. Whenever CC attempts to update the Titles they get out of order. Starting with Fear & Loathing

I was actually just thinking today, if Criterion wants to make a lot of money, why don't they just put Fear and Loathing out on Blu-ray?

I imagine Universal will be handling the Blu-Ray for Fear and Loathing, at least initially.

I really doubt anything new will show up. This is the quiet August before the Sept/Oct/Nov storm. Wings of Desire/More Wenders, That Hamilton Woman, Cronos, Monsoon Wedding, The war trilogy all are coming in fall. Plus many titles promised earlier for this year, like Shanghai Express/Sternbergs, Cook, Thief, etc, and so on.
