Re: Netflix Instant Viewing Log
Let the Right One In is now available. It's subtitled, too, but not sure whether this is the theatrical or DVD (maligned) translation.

The version Netflix is streaming has, frustratingly, the theatrical subtitles. #-o

Has anyone rented Happy Together lately and if so was it the new DVD or the crappy old one?

Sokurov's Alexandra is available, as is - in a similar vein - Free Willy 3.

I gave up after 10 minutes on this because most of the subtitles in the upper half of the screen are half or entirely cut off!nsps wrote:Frustrating if you bought the original DVD, you mean.Cosmic Bus wrote:The version Netflix is streaming has, frustratingly, the theatrical subtitles. #-o

Re: Netflix Instant Viewing Log
I just came across this site, which may prove helpful for spotting new additions (but not to undermine swo17's fine work maintaining this thread, of course).
EDIT: Fixed link.

Rachel, Rachel is finally available from Netflix after months of languishing in the Saved portion of the queue. And Christ, everyone bump it up to the top because it's fantastic

Re: Netflix Instant Viewing Log
Probably not worth mentioning since that wonderful site has been brought to our attention, but there's a ton of great silent cinema that's been added recently -- Griffith, DeMille, Keaton, Chaplin, Pudovkin, Eisenstein, Vertov, etc. There's even a couple of Feyder films, a Dreyer (Leaves From Satan's Book), Feuillade's Les Vampires, and Ruttman's Berlin. And a gazillion other things I've never heard of, no pun intended.

French cinema
Netflix turned me into a connoisseur of great French films. My limited budget rules out purchasing rare and used DVD's. Can anyone tell me why the films of certain directors are so hard to find on DVD (i.e. are unavailable from Netflix): Arnaud Desplechin (Comment je me suis disputé ma vie sexuelle; Conte de Noel); Jacques Rivette (Celine et Julie vont en bateau; Ne touchez pas la hâche--i.e. "Duchess of Langeais"); Benoit Jacquot (Adolphe; La fille seule; L' école de la chair); Godard's great (so I've heard) Vivre sa vie; Jacques Doillon's Ponette (I loved his Raja with Pascal Greggory)? At least La dernière année à Marienbad will be available from Netflix soon but any hopeful gossip from rumor-savvy cinephiles out there concerning the above-named films would be greatly appreciated.

Don't Touch the Axe and A Christmas Tale are Blockbuster exclusives and Vivre sa vie is OOP. Celine and Julie... has never been released in R1

Re: Netflix
You gotta be kidding me; first A Girl Cut in Two and now A Christmas Tale? This is making me hope for Blockbuster to go bankrupt more than ever (thankfully, I already saw Don't Touch the Axe in a film festival on French adapted movies from literature at my local community college and found it to be serviceable at best; certainly nothing compared to Celine and Julie Go Boating, which is just SCREAMING for a Criterion release).domino harvey wrote:Don't Touch the Axe and A Christmas Tale are Blockbuster exclusives and Vivre sa vie is OOP. Re: Netflix
If it gets picked up by IFC or the Weinsteins, it'll probably be a Blockbuster exclusive. Transfer quality is unpredictable, too - A Christmas Tale was fine, but Don't Touch the Axe was a dodgy PAL->NTSC conversion. Not sure if those ever get upgraded when they receive a wider DVD release.

Re: Netflix
I have to say, Netflix's newish policy of sending you "far away" discs as a bonus combined with taking recommendations from zedz in the '90s project has been a real coup for me. Each week for the past month I've gotten an extra movie this way for free (some Kitano, Tsai, and Sokurov). I realize that by saying this out loud I will jinx it from ever happening again, but thought I would share anyway.

Re: Netflix
That reminds me- when I got La Belle Noiseuse a while back it came to me on 2 discs, and I sent the first one back immediately after I finished it. I was delayed in finishing the latter part of the movie, but when I sent the second disc back Netflix counted that disc return as a separate return, and for a couple of rounds I was getting three dvds instead of my planned two. A fluke, I suppose, but for anyone who wants to wade through La Belle Noiseuse for the sake of the 90s project (or otherwise), if you play your cards right, you might be able to wing an extra movie or two.
Much less impressive than your situation, though.
