To come back to Akerman for a second...

Does anyone have any info on the state of her recent films? Would it be be too much to ask for an Eclipse set that would include Sud, De l'autre côté, Là-bas, for example?

Regarding the Swedish "Dreams" mentioned above - does it have English subs?
Yes, the same goes for Sjöberg's Karin Mansdotter. Both look great while Skepp Till Indialand, Nära Livet, Det Regnar På Vår Kärlek also have subs, but a quite poor picture though there's no alternative anayway. If you add Mattson's famous Hon Dansade En Sommar, you have ordered the six most essential DVDs from Sweden with english subs.

The bad news is it really does have that cover.
Maybe you like that one better. The DVD is very good.
Thanks to both of you, great news indeed. I guess there's no alternative to the Swedish edition; that Madman release easily earns the prize for worst cover in recent history. If you want to order from Megastore Sweden, better use the English version. (There seems to be something like a language switch option on the upper left side of the page, but it didn't work when I was trying. Just in case.)

It's never too much to ask but, as much as I'd love to see that, it doesn't seem likely. First Run Films distribute the first two of those, as well as D'est. They're marketed primarily to educational institutions.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge here, but could we see Icarus releasing the Akerman films (for example) as private copies meant for home viewing like some the Marker titles they've made available? I'm glad that Criterion is releasing Dielman in the fall, but it's a shame that the vast majority of her post-70s output is routinely ignored, both critically and in the DVD marketplace. The VHS rips I have of both Sud and De l'autre côté are appalling, but they'll have to do for now I suppose...

So will the results of the Amazon BluRay Poll allow for that film to be released in August, therefore they would most likely announce this week.

Well, they're taking votes until May 25th, so no.

The Bergmans are also coming from Artificial Eye some time this year, I believe?

So then it is likely to be a September release? Either Kwaidan or Picnic at Hanging Rock would be most beneficial because the SD releases would likely get upgraded as well, whether that is something people are interested in is another thing itself.

All Criterion said was that the winning title would be released "later this year," which means that it will be released in the middle of next year.

Just because they should start from the bottom up with these releases because they're sorely in need of reissues does not mean it's a given. In fact, to be a pessimist for just a moment, if they had really gone to all the effort to completely redo one of these titles, do you think they would leave it up to a vote to decide whether they come out or not?

I think that Criterion has probably got Blu-ray releases of all of the eligible titles (and DVD re-issues of Kwaidan and Picnic) in various stages of production. They'll likely all be released by the end of next year. The "winning" title will just be released first. The contest is all about marketing.

Nobody got a response yet about the blog posting regarding Accident and A Brighter Summer Day? I've sent an inquiry but haven't recieved a reply.

A poster at .com, DWK; brought up an interesting bit of speculation. Freelance producer Mark Walkow who's produced some sets for Criterion including Monsters and Madmen, Jigoku, Howard's End, Rebel Samurai, co-produced Videodrome and recently put together the Nikkatsu action films retrospective that Criterion is releasing. (Eclipse?!) He recently got back from a trip from Japan and hinted at some of the projects he was working on while there on his blog http://outcastcinema.blogspot.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

He filmed an interview with director Nobuhiko Obayashi, who directed Hasu (House) that we know Criterion has the rights to. Maybe we'll see a DVD soon? The bigger piece of speculation is that he interviewed Miike and some of the various stars of Audition for a forthcoming DVD/Blu Ray....Audition has been OOP for awhile, same as Gozu. Considering his relatioship with Criterion, there's a pretty good chance that Criterion has picked up Miike's Audition for a forthcoming title.

Well The Last Days of Disco is almost a certainty, what with Image putting that "Criterion trailer" out there. Other than that..I dunno. Maybe they'll finally get Gray's Anatomy out there. I've only been waiting for like six years now or however long ago that Wellspring deal went down.

Wings of Desire is coming in September: I assume any other Wenders will be released the same month.

It was mentioned a few pages back in this thread, and here's the NY Times story (it's the very last line).

I hope so. Walkabout has always been in my top ten. The film is deserving of a grandiose release. We're still stuck with the non-anamorphic barebones edition.

I know they won't do this, but I'd love to have both the old commentary with Roeg and the girl (Jenny, right?) and a new one, just to see if Roeg's changed any in his thoughts/memories on the film.

Of course, interviews with Roeg are a must.
