This relates to Matt's post a couple of pages back about no Preminger on the horizon: James Quandt's notes on the forthcoming Preminger retro at the Cinematheque Ontario indicate in no uncertain terms that the Preminger estate would not approve a screening of Skidoo, so a Criterion DVD (or any official release, for that matter) seems unlikely, despite CC's relationship with Paramount. I was pretty sure this was the case before, but it is nice to have official confirmation. Still doesn't excuse no Bonjour Tristesse, though.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but I fail to see what control the Premingers would have over a film they don't own. It's Paramount's property, is it not? Sure, they can bitch and moan but I don't see why Paramount would let that stop them.

I mean, Beatrice Welles rose a stink over what versions of Touch of Evil could/should be released but Universal went ahead and threw them all out there anyway eventually. Similar situation?

I'm assuming Paramount only has USA rights. There have been a number of domestic SKIDOO screenings over the last few years. The Preminger Estate probably controls other territories, including Canada.

Universal "settled" with Beatrice, paying her a pretty big chunk of change so they could get the release out the door. Paramount may not want to do the same thing, for what is ultimately a pretty marginal release.

I saw the Violence at Noon print when it played there a couple of weeks ago: it was gorgeous; entirely spotless, easily one of the nicest b+W prints I've ever seen in the theatre.

Any word on the status of the New Yorker titles up for grabs? I would love to see Criterion pick up some of their titles, including Celine and Julie Go Boating, Edvard Munch, and A Man Escaped (which already seems to be in the works).

Edvard Munch is not a New Yorker property; they just distribute the DVD. Project X owns the film, and they've done such a good job with Watkins' films.

The next Godard release will most likely be VIVRE SA VIE, after the July 2009 releases of MADE IN USA and 2 OR 3 THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER.

We hope to release a box set with the early short works of Martin Scorsese sometime next year.

Random speculation will be no fun for September, now that we know that Wings of Desire, That Hamilton Woman, and Jeanne Dielman will be coming out. Though not confirmed, I'd also put money on Paris, Texas to complement Wings.

I believe the shorts in question are less than 180 minutes total. If they release this on Eclipse they are wasting a flimsy Eclipse packaging on something that surely calls for a creative digipak.

I saw Cruel Story, Double Suicide, and Pleasures of the Flesh at the American Cinematheque two weeks ago. Prints look like they're ready to go. Looked as nice as when I saw other new Janus prints waiting for release.

Unfortunately, the best film of the two nights I went, The Christain Rebel, still had a mediocre print. It didn't hurt the strength of the film one bit.
