Is anyone aware of any updates over the past few years regarding a potential Criterion release of Daalder's Massacre at Central High? Looking back in the Eclipse threads there was some talk that it would be released by Subversive Cinema, but that was back in 2006. As I understand Massacre at Central High does not have a R1 release.

I know there was talk of it a while ago along with other potential Suzuki films.
They said there were no plans last time I asked but the new transfer and subtitles on the version available through their website leaves me cautiously optimistic. If the Nikkatsu Action Eclipse set comes out this year, as speculated, it's possible they might tie it in with some main line reissues or new titles. I'd recommend Asking Mulvaney though--the more they're hassled the faster they'll come.

Barcelona's DVD is anamorphic and it has a commentary. Why do people keep clamoring for titles that are already out in good editions?
I have the Warner's edition already. I just figured since the other two are on Criterion, why not the the third of the trilogy? Since the DVD has been out for 7 years, and the movie itself was released 15 years ago, it could probably garner some new material.
I have to say the existing one is a pretty solid release, with commentary, a making of doc. and a alt. ending. However, if you want to read more about the films I recommend Doomed Bourgeois in Love which collects essays on all 3 of his films.

Au Revoir Les Enfants
Down by Law
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Howard's End
Kwaidan

Seems like Criterion needs help choosing a future Blu-Ray release 8-)

Awesome. What is everyone voting for? I haven't seen any of them yet personally, so any would do it for me.

It's a toss up between DBL and Kwaidan. If they get the MoC (extended) cut of Kwaidan it's getting my vote.

This is more than a little annoying- why tease us with this? Release them all.

I could name a hundred more titles from the collection I'd rather see get Blu than the Malle. Not that I don't think it's a deserving film, but.

I voted for Malle even though I'd rather see something like Elevator to the Gallows go to Blu-Ray.

I agree there are other titles which SHOULD be going to blu-ray before these five, but Criterion pleased me with the Marienbad announcement so I can't complain :D

From a purely visual standpoint, I'd have to go with Kwaidan or Picnic. That being said, DBL has some gorgeous B+W cinematography and is my favorite film of the bunch, so it gets my vote.

I would take a blu treatment of Solyaris before any of them.

They're obviously all ready to be released, they're just doing this for a little marketing.

Yeah, it doesn't matter to me, I probably wouldn't get any of them.

After voting for "Kwaidan" (what else???), I took the chance to remind them that we need a new version of "I know where I'm going" much more urgently. But I suppose they won't listen, and then, I can't play Blu anyway.

The news that Howard's End is moving from the Merchant Ivory collection to the main label makes me wish that there were a "yawning" emoticon.

If I recall correctly, Cult Epics was also going to release this is a box set last year and decided not to at the last minute. Similarly, TCM tried to play it at the beginning of this month but took it off their schedule from what I understand was rights issues.

The listing for the blu-ray of Howard's End still credits Merchant Ivory, so I wouldn't make that assumption.

Kwaidan of course. I think all of these are going to be released on Blu-ray anyhow, but it is just a matter of which one first.

Definitely Kwaidan, with my desire to have it first only increased by the possibility that Donald Richie will wax poetic even more about Hello Kitty in the on-disc supplements (re. the second Kwaidan-Richie video on the Amazon page).
