Any chance of Rivette's Out 1 being released? Has anyone e-mailed Mulvaney about this title?

Being that I know very little about the distribution of this film, other than there is no suitable R1 edition, can you elaborate as to why this would not be a potential criterion release (besides the length)?

It's a long standing tradition that Criterion doesn't release Rivette films, regardless of rights issues (though I believe Out 1 has some).

Up until recently, there was also a long-standing tradition not to release The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so you never know...

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
On 24 March I e-mailed Mulvaney this brief note:
I've never heard back from anyone. Either they are still laughing madly at my question or they are astonished at my ability to guess the next Eclipse box.I've been perusing the giant Ingmar Bergman Archives and I realize that I'll never get a chance to see all of the things Bergman directed for Swedish television. Is there any chance that Eclipse will do a Bergman: The Television Plays set? (I've no idea if the current lawsuit issue will prohibit such a thing, I hope not.)

Stephen Prince is presenting at my University next week. I will ask him if he knows of any Kurosawa releases by CC that may be coming soon.

You should ask him about any releases, period, that he'll be involved in.psufootball07 wrote:Stephen Prince is presenting at my University next week. I will ask him if he knows of any Kurosawa releases by CC that may be coming soon.

Should I get him to sign one of my DVDs, or is that something you hold off for a director, even though most of the great ones are no longer with us. I do have Ran, Seven Samurai, Rashomon which he wrote an essay for, Ikiru, Yojimbo/Sanjuro set, High and Low, and Kagemusha, I do not however have Straw Dogs, damn you MGM for making this OOP.mfunk9786 wrote:You should ask him about any releases, period, that he'll be involved in.psufootball07 wrote:Stephen Prince is presenting at my University next week. Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
I asked Fincher's DVD producer David Prior via email if they were going to work on a special edition of The Game w/Criterion....well, it seems that they are in discussions/negotiations. I'm somewhat confused by his reply:
Anyways. Interesting answer...The Game looks to be a possibility sometime in the future.
I'm a bit unsure if he's referring to Universal or Criterion when he says "if someone at the studio really wants it". I think he might mean Criterion, as from my talks with him, it would be a similar situation in which Prior would produce the new DVD rather than Criterion themselves and he's mentioned to me that there was difficulty with Criterion with Benjamin Button over the studios relative lack of involvement...I dunno. We've already had informal discussions about it. We have to wait until someone at the studio really wants it, that way we're in a better position to do it the way we like.

Your post is intriguing. I'm sure Prior means Universal when he says "the studio." No one in the industry would call Criterion a studio.ianungstad wrote:I'm a bit unsure if he's referring to Universal or Criterion when he says "if someone at the studio really wants it".
Plus, we know Criterion really wants it. "We'll keep trying" is a quote from Jonathan Turell himself re: Criterion releasing THE GAME.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
I also sent an email to Rialto about It Always Rains on Sunday and Brighton Rock. While it's almost a given that a Rialto release ends up on Criterion dvd, with these two films, they are both Studio Canal titles. The last Canal release through Rialto was Diva, which ended up with Lionsgate who has a deal with Canal. Rialto confirmed that both titles will be out on Criterion (she said towards the end of the year) so it seems that with this bit of news and the oop Canal titles coming back into print, Criterion has worked out a deal with Lionsgate/Canal. It's good news IMO that there are no longer issues regarding Canal's library. Considering Brighton Rock is screening in June/July, end of the year seems a bit soon for that title but I suppose it's probable.
The lady from Rialto said that the forthcoming theatrical run of Ran is a new restored print and that they had the rights to the title. I didn't ask if it was just theatrical rights or if they had home video rights to. Maybe someone here knows? It could be possible that the current licensed from Genius disc went out of print because Criterion will rerelease the film on dvd next year with the new restoration via Rialto...seems likely. Though someone did post that Mulvaney stated they don't have the rights anymore in the Ran thread.

Also, regaridng The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Mulvaney said that the clips from the exhibit in Australia must have been from the laser disc as they have no plans for the title. Koch Lorber also said that they have not lost the rights to the film and they have no plans of doing an upgrade of the current dvd.

I think this might be an error. Rialto's president told me very recently IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY will not be a Criterion release. Then again, things do change.ianungstad wrote:I also sent an email to Rialto about It Always Rains on Sunday and Brighton Rock. Well, this is the email I recieved:
I don't know who Pelin is or what position this lady/man holds at Rialto. It would be too bad if they were not coming. Thanks for your interest in Rialto Pictures! We expect these titles to be made available on DVD by the Criterion Collection towards the end of the year, although there is no set date yet. Please check our website http://www.rialtopictures.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; regularly for updated information.
Thank you,

There was a week-long Zeitgeist sponsored festival here in Seattle a few months back were Umbrellas of Cherbourg screened, along with some other titles they've recently released on DVD (Irma Vep, Guy Maddin's Careful), maybe they have the rights?ianungstad wrote:Also, regaridng The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. After drudging around The Auteurs, I began to think we will be getting more Wenders than we think, more Greenaway and Year of the Horse by Jarmusch.

Isn't Year of the Horse tied up in rights issues? And I have a hard time taking anything found on the Auteurs as even semi-probable. :\

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
I think that might not rule out an Eclipse set of Robert Hamer films: IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY; PINK STRING AND SEALING WAX; THE SPIDER AND THE FLY, (I can dream); possibly TO PARIS WITH LOVE; or maybe even FATHER BROWN. Most, if not all of these titles - FATHER BROWN being Columbia - have been consolidated under Carlton and Studio Canal. Then again, perhaps the likelier scenario is a more loosely grouped set of Ealing Studio dramas.jaredsap wrote:"It will definitely not be coming out from Criterion." --Rialto's president to me five minutes ago re: IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Let me rephrase. IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY will definitely not be coming from Criterion or Eclipse. And yes, FATHER BROWN is still owned by Columbia so that surely isn't coming from Eclipse either.George Kaplan wrote:I think that might not rule out an Eclipse set of Robert Hamer films: IT ALWAYS RAINS ON SUNDAY; PINK STRING AND SEALING WAX; THE SPIDER AND THE FLY, (I can dream); possibly TO PARIS WITH LOVE; or maybe even FATHER BROWN.
