It's definitely Cronos. Very surprising. I think the previous DVD (from Lionsgate) has been out of print for some time. It was pretty loaded.

Cronos at one point was an October Films and a Lionsgate release, just in case people were curious where it could have come from, if not directly from the director.

I always think it's cool, and I don't mean this in a dick-ish way, when they "announce" or hint at a movie that no one was speculating on at all.

Good news for you Guillermo Del Toro fans and Blu-ray owners out there...

"I believe that very, very, very soon we're going to be announcing a very special Blu-ray edition of Cronos," Del Toro told ShockTillYouDrop.com last night at a Hollywood bash celebrating the DVD and Blu-ray release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. "When you know who is doing it and how we're doing it, it will be more exciting. I cannot announce it properly, but it's very exciting for me because it's one of those movies that I think I want to revisit, re-time, restructure the sound for the Blu-ray experience in a big way."

Asked if it will carry over the bonus material featured on Lionsgate's special edition, he revealed "We're going to do, basically, the most exhausting extras that can ever be put together. There are many editions around the world with different extras, but there is no definitive edition."

Since the newsletter clue regarding WOD mentioned a summer release, I think it would be a safe assumption that it will be out before Cronos which has now been tipped off as a fall release.

It's fun to be surprised. As for Del Toro, well, whatever. If he helps Criterion shift a few units to the geek set, all the better. No need to revisit the Benjamin Button debate again so soon.

It's been a while since we've had a surprise in the newsletter (unless I'm forgetting something).

That said, I'm sure, as del Toro said, there'll be loads of extras (commentary, etc). I've never listened to one of his commentaries, but apparently his Vampyr commentary was great.

Anyway, a very interesting movie.

All joking aside, I would LOVE to see a "What? Criterion Released something-by-Michael-Bay/Wes Anderson/Chasing Amy/Benjamin Button/Cronos/something else that made over $5 Million domestically?????!!!" thread to dump all the whining about mission statements and whatnot into so that I can forever ignore it.

I say this more for with respect to my blood pressure than to the betterment of the forum, but I think gains could be made on both fronts.

I thought that there were already complaints over too much Bergman (and Ozu and Kurosawa) already? Personally I feel Criterion should do the best thing for everyone and release nothing, then there would be nothing to complain about.
