I assume other New Yorker titles also came from this license with Gaumont, such as Godard's Weekend. Would these not make for decent candidates for Criterion a few years down the road? Weekend in 1080p from Criterion would be nice.

Certainly, if NY'er really lost the rights to L'Atalante, all of Vigo would make a perfect CC release. We know they have the rights for Zero, from the old HVe VHS days.

I have that sublime AEye set (one of my most treasured sets and definitely AEye's best, maybe only matched by their subbing & presentation of Fantomas), which could only be bettered by an improved subbing job. I've always thought the subs for L'atalante were better on the NY'er release, particularly in catching much of Pere Jules' humor.

One more thing-- let's say CC did release a Vigo set, including all 4 films, etc. I'd bet you they'd break up that Cineastre Notre Temps episode on Vigo into excerpts, rather than show the whole thing straight thru... I HATE when they do that.

The commentary on the NYer is by Sterritt and it's pretty good. In fact, by studio error, the default audio setting on the disc is the commentary!

Anyone know when This Sporting Life will get a UK release. Gets announced every month for release over the past 18 months but never appears. Was reviewed this month in the papers and had a 3rd of November release date. No sign of it yet. Anyone know why the delay.

While I'am asking questions, any info on when Battle of Algiers will appear again in the UK.

I would buy the Criterion, I very much doubt a UK edition would be anywhere near as good. It also contains Anderson's final film Is That all there Is?.

I know nothing about Battle of Algiers but may as well say the same thing again, both outstanding releases.

I noticed that a lot of the Criterion titles that went out of print and moved over to MGM are out of print at MGM now. Straw Dogs, How to Get Ahead in Advertising and Sid and Nancy are no longer being produced by MGM. Isn't there an insider here who has contacts at MGM? Is Criterion going to license more titles? Is it possible that some of these would be on the list? I think it's sad for MGM to pick up all these films and release them in pretty barebones dvds and then just let them lapse. Criterion would have kept them in print at least, if not upgraded some (Advertising and Nancy)

I know there are a few of you whining in the thread about Image's purchase by Q Black Media that Criterion has been focusing too much attention on mainstream cinema...and I sort of agree but in this case I think seeing all three return to the collection would be most welcome.

Either one is likely the next release in 2009. For the lather part of you question, I don't think anyone on this forum will know exactly when that is.

Be careful, MMM isn't always accurate. I recall they listed the New Yorker Bressons as in print months after they disappeared from online retailers and prices went through the roof.

Definitly seems like an Eclipse title. Maybe it's part of that J-Horror eclipse box coming some time this year. Frankly, while some of the visuals were interesting, that looks like one of the worst movies ever made. That trailer almost gave me seizures. Is this movie actually suppose to be good? Or is the interest in the film solely based off the bizarre visuals?

Are you guys kidding me? Hausu is one of the most insanely fun experiences ever. Pure crazy Japanese pop art spectacle. I think it deserves a stand alone release. I'd take it over another Ozu any day.
