I would guess there would be a better chance of Criterion licensing some of the Pialat films that are getting released through MoC.What A Disgrace wrote:Sony's disc of Pialat's Van Gogh seems to be OOP, as is New Yorker's Loulou...is there a possibility that Criterion would release the films, I wonder?

Going to see Vivre sa Vie in Philly? That's where Janus films says it is showing today. I wish I could make the 3 hour drive to see the film from State College.arsonfilms wrote:I'm actually going out to see Vivre sa Vie tomorrow night, which obviously means its still making the rounds theatrically. I wouldn't count on a DVD release announcement any time soon.psufootball07 wrote:So will the February releases be announced on Friday with Saturday being the 15th or should I expect it to arrive between Saturday and Monday? God I hope Vivre sa Vie is coming.
Also: While Friday is always a possibility, Monday seems a bit more likely.

Yes Il Grido is a Kino release. Early Antonioni shorts and docs would be interesting. Don't when The Human Condition trilogy is going surface!Tommaso wrote:And I think the time is due for more Antonioni in the collection. "Signora senza camelie", "Il grido", "Le Amiche", (though I think one of these films is out on Kino or Image, don't remember which one), or "Oberwald" coupled with Cocteau's "L'aigle a deux tetes".

Having spent the greater part of the last 3 hours looking for any evidence of a future Out 1 dvd release ever, I've got to ask: are we pretty much all guaranteed to die without seeing it happen?PimpPanda wrote:Out 1: Noli me Tangere, maybe!?
If only!
Please someone be a Jesus figure and show me the light... have I missed any resources (rumors, hints, whatever) that suggest this movie will ever get even a shitty DVD treatment? or will everyone just have to cross their fingers that it plays once on a free weekend in a city within 400 miles of where they live?

Even though there is no DVD release in sight, there has been some great news recently: custom English subs were made for the copy at a private site.
I also think it would be a much better (but much harder to dO) release than The Human Condition trilogy, which I do not find worthy of its status at all (having only seen the first).

what titles should be included in a Mexican Bunuel eclipse, presuming we get such a release with Exterminating angel in february? (vivre sa vie in March, I think)

Simon of the Desert, El, The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz, Nazarin
But your guess is as good as mine.

It's not far-fetched to expect a set for some of his Mexican films given that Criterion has problems finding extras and sources on Bunuel discs.

Susana is licensed to Facets... Los Olvidados is stuck in litigation but will most likely see a release through Koch Lorber (as opposed to Lionsgate).sir karl wrote:FWIW, the German R2 Box include these films:movielocke wrote:what titles should be included in a Mexican Bunuel eclipse, presuming we get such a release with Exterminating angel in february? I personally wouldn't mind seeing Exterminating Angel and Simon of the Desert packaged together (Like Mishima and Patriotism or Tout va Bien and Letter to Jane).. and then seeing an eclipse package of Bunuel's pre-Viridiana Mexican films.

Again no Shanghai Express
The UK release of Hobson is barebones but the transfer is very good so I'm not terribly tempted to get the Criterion. I'll get The Exterminating Angel for certain but am going to hold back on Simon of the Desert; would be interested to hear what other members think of it. Disappointed to see more existing titles being reissued individually instead of getting two brand-new releases. Not a great month in my opinion.

How can you like Faces, but not Shadows? I can understand being turned off by the later stuff, but Shadows is just wonderful.domino harvey wrote:Oh thank God, now I can own Faces without having to own the restswo17 wrote:Shadows and Faces are also coming unboxed.

A few other guesses now that I'm feelin' hot.....
Two or Three Things will most definitely be released onto DVD next to Made in USA, which means late 2009 at the earliest.
Marienbad might get paired with another Resnais title not coming from Rialto (like the recent Melvilles). I wish I knew more about the most recent print of Je t'aime je t'aime that screened at Cannes since I think other Janus holdings -- or soon to be Janus holdings -- also screened there. This would also be nice to see given it would no doubtedly pull the rug out from under those who worship the ingenuity of Eternal Sunshine. Not that I have anything against Kaufman, but I think it's about time Resnais gets some more credit for his influence on present day arty cinema... as opposed to constantly hearing about Dick and Truffaut.

I think it's terrific, very funny with some wonderful imagery. Not one of my favorite Bunuels, but in the top 10.Mr Finch wrote:going to hold back on Simon of the Desert; would be interested to hear what other members think of it.

My favourite Bunuel. Don't let the running time fool you into thinking this is a minor work. Strange and hilarious, with one of the greatest left-field endings in cinema.Mr Finch wrote: I'll get The Exterminating Angel for certain but am going to hold back on Simon of the Desert; would be interested to hear what other members think of it.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
though I am pleased all three movies are getting a release I'm deeply disappointed by no eclipse and no blu-ray. hard to say if this is criterion dropping the ball for 09 or not but the bluray delays seem to indicate they're not playing their best game. they have the chance to redeem themselves yet, hopefully we'll get another ozu eclipse in march.
which would redeem the lackluster first two months.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
mteller and zedz, thanks for the feedback re Simon. The only Bunuel film I've seen so far is Belle de Jour wich I found superb. The Exterminating Angel seems like worth a blind-buy. Again no Eclipse which would seem to indicate they only come out every second or third month.

Seriously, only two and a half movies? Welcome choices, but has Criterion ever released this little in a month other than December?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Sadly, three titles a month is their standard. We occasionally get four or five titles a month, but since the advent of Eclipse, things have slowed. But we didn't get much of Eclipse either. Great titles this month, but the production level has slowed. For a market heavily moving all Blu-ray, the slate is looking pretty bleak.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Blu-Ray disc sales still just 5% of DVD sales?... But certainly the Criterion Blu-Ray project seems to have stretched production resources across the board...
