Well the Vorlicek films are entertaining but hardly important. (Well Three Wishes for Cinderella is possibly the most widely seen Czech film, at least in Europe.) Even though granted "Maitres des Temps" isn't a Tarkovsky eitherWhat A Disgrace wrote:By what criteria?
I haven't seen any of the films from this list; not a single one, so I can't speak from experience. What make the Czech and Slovak films less applicable than Nightmare Alley, Les Maitres du Temps, Funeral Parade of the Roses, or Idi Amin?

Nick, I know it's been asked before and only recently on another thread but is a MoC reissue of DER BLAUE ENGEL still on the cards, if not for this year, then for 2009?
I also recall you saying some time ago you've been trying to get MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW for years from Paramount. Any updates on that?

Thanks for the swift reply, Nick, much appreciated.
Shame about MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW (maybe Universal will release this as part of their Cinema Classics series eventually).
I do hope that MoC eventually get to DER BLAUE ENGEL. Completely understand that it's not a top priority, just wondered if it's being considered at all.
If MoC ever get to introduce Chinese cinema into the collection, I'd suggest the Shaw Brothers' 1960 film THE ENCHANTING SHADOW (again, of course, depending on licencing issues) which is the template for the A Chinese Ghost Story series from the 1990s. ENCHANTING SHADOW would make for a nice counterpart to the Japanese ghost stories in Onibaba and Kuroneko.
If Artificial Eye no longer hold the UK rights, then I'd also suggest FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE by Chen Kaige (1993).

hi nick, could you tell me if MoC will re-release on dvd with corrected tranfers of ASPHALT and SPIONE, sin both of them are defective. By the way, about Spione, i know that there is a german documentary out there (which is already included with the french (MK2) release in france. it's a german documentary about the making of and the restoration (see this link for more infos)
do you think it will be possible to include this on a future re-release on this film ?
thanks to answer

Dear Monks19. We don't consider ASPHALT and SPIONE to be "defective". These DVDs were authored in 2004 for playing in the UK on PAL equipment. If you are playing these discs on multiregion equipment, piped to an NTSC display, it *may* be that the resulting imagery is not optimal. We have no intention of re-releasing them.

Yes, great news on Ichikawa, almost regardless of which title(s) show up in the end, although the one I would give just about half my manhood to see released is Conflagration. I suppose it is not possible for Peerpee to quietly wink if that is on the cards...
And, FSimeoni, I am sure you have followed the "ridiculous riddle" more closely than I... How are we looking for Visconti's Sandra? Is there still hope, or, has the year/initial been covered already.

To tell you the truth I don't know. I got bored of trying to figure it all out. Though I raised the point on Sandra, when the spine number we all assumed it would be was taken by Judex (which I don't mind about as it has become my most anticipated release of the year). I was hoping Nick might answer with a sort of 8 Italian releases this year the way he did with the French in the irritable teaser thread.
Hopefully thisis a secret MoC

Great news on Ichikawa, I was just about to buy Criterion's Fires on the Plain....
If you ever will introduce Swedish cinema to the series "Picassos äventyr" would be the best way to do so.
Some screens from the SF-dvd: Per Oscarsson - Lena Olin - Gösta Ekman - Lena Nyman - Bernard Cribbins - Churchill - Animated
