Plexifilm have just announced their first BluRay title: Helvetica - surely if they can do it Criterion can!

Let's not forget that (by my count) there are already twelve (!) Criterion DVD titles available as either or both HDDVD and Blu-ray. If we add titles from the Criterion laserdisc catalogue, there'd be even more.

Is the BluRay packaging a requirement for people who produce the format? I would imagine that this may be holding Criterion back until they have free reign on the design (that won't be impeded by the blue strip at the top) and can identify their hi-def line the way they want to.

Well Daft Punk are releasing their film Electroma, via Vice, on Blu-Ray in custom made metal packaging. It might just be that the discs come with the packaging and the companies producing the titles have the option of using the *free* packaging provided, or to spend more and produce their own custom cases.

Warner's going to be releasing about a dozen cardboardy things later this year, although I think Bonnie & Clyde may be the same type of thing, and will be out later this month.

(Also David Gilmore's blu-ray release was cardboardy crap too, as far as I could tell from the massacred copies at Best Buy.)

(Oh, and Close Encounters also.)

I asked Sony exactly this last week and was happy to discover that the horrible "blu" case with rounded edges and embossed "blu-ray" logo is not mandatory.

Next problem = adding an "e" to "Blu", might be more difficult.

I don't see why Criterion can't just continue their usually packaging will perhaps a sticker or logo somewhere on the set.

If we called them "BR" then what would we call writable Blu-Rays? "BRR"?

I agree BluRay is totally naff. (Another thing I preferred about the now dead format - simplicity of nomenclature.)

Simpler for most of us here, maybe, but on a pure "how easy is it to say?" level, the "V" sound is uncommon in non-English languages -- even plain old "DVD" causes problems for people around these parts. Then again, "Blu-ray" has an L and an R, so I'm not sure that's much of an improvement.

Maybe they can skip Blu-Ray and go straight to Red Ray?

I know it's not exactly a consumer format, but man, 8 1/2 in 4k? That would be sweet.

It says Walkabout is coming out in a regular Criterion edition

This is amazing news.

And hopefully a lesson in humility for the so many members here who were convinced that:

(A) Criterion going Blu was years off.
(B) Their Blu editions would be substantially more expensive than DVD editions.

Ah, a new SE of Walkabout in 1080p - another reason for me to get my act together and get a Blu-Ray player. But the region hacking for Blu-Ray discs remains at an impasse.

So Chungking and Bottle Rocket, for now, are Blu-Ray only.

This is major earth-shattering news. I'm not sure how to feel about new editions of 400 Blows and For All Mankind, as I own them already and have yet to upgrade to Blu-Ray. I have a feeling that Criterion's early adoption of Blu-Ray, (compared to their late adoption of DVD), will greatly enhance the sales of Blu-Ray players amongst our niche.

I'm shocked that they're doing it, and it will be interesting to see what their Blu-ray release schedule is. I still think this will hurt their overall sales unless every release is produced in both formats. I hope and assume Criterion has some sort of strategy to prevent the "I'll wait for it to come on Blu-ray" consumers.

I can't wait to see how they package the discs. Its secondary to the disc itself, but still, I've been rather unimpressed with Blu-ray packaging so far. I wonder if they will create a new logo? Wacky B anyone?
