Criterion seems to go through these alternating cycles of "on" and "off" years. I do not wish to start a big debate on what is "on" and what is "off", but for my taste 2008 has been an "off" year. Without crticisizing individually what they are selecting to release, we can express disappointment that several highly anticipated titles (Salo, La Notte, Vampyr, etc.) are not getting released for months. The pacing is also slower (two off months for Eclipse). We continue to speculate that the next month will bring about a huge surprise, only to be disappointed once again. This is how I felt in 2006. 2007 was very good. The cycle continues.

Interesting theory. Currently, I'm very excited about BLAST OF SILENCE, and the "rumored" upcoming editions of WHITE DOG and WISE BLOOD. However, I'm not certain if we'll see the latter two titles show up in 2008 or not. They could slide to 2009.

This is completely random, but what do you think the chances of seeing a release of Wild Man Blues by criterion are? I can only imagine this would be something they would be interested in, especially given the fact they already have a relationship with Barbara Kopple and that it's never been released on DVD.

These are not rumoured, they were said to be coming from Criterion themselves. Also, why do you think they will slide to 2009?

Actually, it has, and I own a copy, but it seems to be out of print.

I e-mailed asking about Cronenberg's Shivers and they said there no plans at this time. Just to rule that one out.

Lola Montes, Hou's The Puppetmaster and Soderbergh's Gray's Anatomy have all been discontinued.

I'm going to remain hopelessly optimistic that we'll see Lola in the Ophul's set. Gray's has been expected as a Criterion for some time now. I'd love to see Criterion release Hou's film, as the now out-of-print DVD is an absolute eyesore.

A big chunk of the FL/Wellspring catalog has gone OOP since the Weinsteins picked it up. I've said it before and I'll say it again here -- I'm not so sure it actually means they've lost the rights, I think it's just entirely possible the Weinsteins have no interest in keeping these films available and are perfectly willing to sit on them indefinitely (which seems to be what they're doing with the Wellspring theatrical catalog).

What do you think the possibilities are of Paranoid Park coming to Criterion They seem to have a good relationship with IFC and Van Sant, and I think his short The Discipline of D.E. needs a release as well...

What relationship do they have with IFC?

I swear I've seen a few Criterions licensed by IFC, unless I'm thinking of something totally different. I can't think of examples right now, I'll get back to you as I remember.

Sólo con tu pareja was licensed from IFC, but to my knowledge that was the only title. I'd say it's the exception. IFC has a distribution deal with Genius Products and The Weinstein Company, whom I'm sure plan on distributing Paranoid Park.

The New Line deal was limited to a few select films from Fine Line that, it seems to me, were determined from the start, so my feeling is that our chances of getting Stagecoach in the collection went from zero to zip.

Ira Deutchman cut the deal for those few titles with Criterion. I wouldn't be surprised if Warner chose not to renew the license when it ends (I'm guessing the end of 2009).

Just saw two Wertmuller films recently. Just wondering what the thing is with Fox Lorber... Any possibilities we might be up for a double L.W.-thon with Swept Away and Seven Beauties.

Both copies I saw recently blew... Horrible transfers. I'd love to see the films again... How they are supposed to be seen.

I agree the lina w films seven beauties and swept away are not of the quality they deserve, but come on, criterion should focus on releasing more movies that have not even had a dvd release in the north america/region 1 market.

I think CC should focus on getting films out by such greats as mizoguchi, naruse, rossellini, eustache (mother and the whore...i wish!!!), rivette, duras (india song hopefully), joris ivens, rocha, duarte, michael snow (wavelenght 1967), bruce conner (report, a movie, crossroad, mongoloid, looking for mushrooms - wow what a great ecplise box these 5 films would make!!!), etc, just to name a few off the top of my head.

don't get me wrong, i adore lina w films. i just think CC needs to diversify somewhat just so it can offer more eclectic selections. I guess i wouldn't complain if swept away and/or seven beauties received the CC treatment. But, at this point i would prefer to see dvd's of films which have never been released on dvd period as we are about to embark on yet another major format switch (bluray is here).
let me know your thoughts, both from lightbulb as well as the rest of the forum panel. sorry if i stepped on anyone's toes...just expressing some viewpoints.

Too many women directors in the collection already....that Varda set means no more women for the next 10 years or so.
