Yeah, this is about the ONLY good thing Alliance has ever released on their own onto DVD.

Sad but true...Except for their wonderfully executed bilingual packaging, of course (which often delays lower-priority releases of US titles by weeks/months).

i feel like a yutz buying the same movies over and over just in different packaging and maybe with a little bit of extras.

With the new release of Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers in Reg 2. I was wondering if this title might be released by Criterion. It was last released by Image in Reg 1, and considering the distribution arrangment Criterion has with Image. I was hoping that this film or even Ossessione, might make it into the collection. We don't have any plans for "Rocco and his Brothers," but I'm not sure about "Ossessione." Please check back about that second one as there may be more information available in the future. I hope this helps, and thanks for your email!

Tantalising. Is there a good transfer of Ossessione out anywhere? My R4 is pretty mediocre, as I recall.

Perhaps Ossessione would be paired with Terra trema and Bellissima for an "Early Visconti" Eclipse set.

As are my R1 Image discs of Ossessione, Rocco & Terra trema.

Ossessione is coming out in Italy next month from RHV, whose disc of La Terra trema is gorgeous (and has English subs). Screen caps here.

Best thing I heard for a while! I shied back from buying the BFI "Ossessione" after seeing the mess that their "Terra Trema" is. If RHV provides subs for "Ossessione" as well, then it will be time for another order from Italy for me....

RHV's La Terra Trema disc really is amazing, but is there any word as to whether Ossessione will have English subtitles as well?

Odd that Rocco isn't planned. It's an Image title, no? But I'm thrilled that the Visconti coverage is getting spread out a little, rather than a bunch of discs of the same handful of films.

No word on subs yet, but I'll be picking this up eventually and will post here with details. The BFI disc of Ossessione is if anything worse than their La Terra trema - avoid at all costs!

Lionsgate, not Criterion may be releasing Diva. Link.

If Diva was a Studio Canal title, then this makes sense. Either Rialto's exclusive distribution deal with Criterion doesn't apply to Studio Canal titles anymore, or this film was licensed right in between Rialto and Criterion did.

Back to normal, and back to releasing stuff I'm genuinely excited about seeing. Yay!!

This is certainly a welcome sign after a few lackluster (in terms of quantity more than quality) months. I'm even cool with no Eclipse set this month after these titles.

Bummer. I'm dying for a (new) DVD of the original.

So is Entertainment Weekly. They highlight their desire for said DVD in the new issue.

I think, if Criterion (or whoever ends up with the rights), released it, it'd sell very well. I mean, before I even got into film, I knew who Olivier was. And Michael Caine is loved by seemingly all Americans. He's sort of like the British version of Morgan Freeman.

Morgan Freeman?? I mean, sure, both are extremely palatable actors who can't possibly rub anyone the wrong way, but Freeman doesn't have the character range that Caine has. I almost feel that Jack Nicholson would be an easier comparison, if he were less cantankerous.

To me, Caine gets many roles (excluding the newest Sleuth), where he simply plays the old mentor to the main protagonist, like Freeman plays in almost EVERY role.
