Even though they kind of ruled it out in the latest blog posting, the "Janus Films" branded line that they are using for the featureless versions of White Mane, The Red Balloon, and Paddle to the Sea would seem ideal for what you're proposing. They would probably bump the MSRP up to 19.95 or 24.95 for feature-length titles. As I've mentioned before, such a line would be analogous to the defunct "Classic Collection" joint venture they had with Home Vision. Without that line, Janus properties like The Cars That Ate Paris, The Rocking Horse Winner, Man of Aran, and Louisiana Story might still be sitting in limbo. They really do need something like this, as the current business models and mission statements they've set up for Criterion and Eclipse just don't encompass all of their holdings.

It used to be every two months; and changed to every three months when they announced Shoot the Piano Player in December of 05.

I hope it isn't going back to two months. That would suck. I hope its just a slight delay of title announcements.

Actually Criterion is an associate company of Voyajanus, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Steinbeckturrell, which is owned by...Dualstar Entertainment Group.

From someone on .com who recently talked to Peter Becker : Salo will be announced for August and the short film by Mishima "Patriotism" is being prepped, most likely as a supplement for the Mishima : A Life in 4 Chapters dvd.

Thanks to those who post the rare worthwhile tidbits from the .com forum here on this one. The last time (and I do mean the last time) I went there, it was because I'd read on this forum that they had some member who had inside knowledge of advance releases. I ended up reading some thread with a bunch of people complaining about the Varda box set because Criterion had decided to put a picture of some really ugly, old chick on the front of the box, and they were not cool with that. Can't do it.

I dread posting this publicly because I'm certain the member in question only did this so I'd mention it here, but it was so pathetic that I can't resist: I just logged in and was quickly met with a PM telling me to "piss off" for "spying" on their forum... Maybe they'd like us more if below all our posts we had signatures with giant pictures and hundreds of numbers denoting which Criterions each of us owned?

I'd like to think that on the cc site they posted the link to dotcom above this forums link to detour the mass of listmaking fanboys there, and preserve the smaller more eclectic population here to maintain the occasionally impressive (certainly by general internet barometer) quality of discourse here. And versus the dotcom forum itself, which I visited twice in somewhere around 2004-05 while simultaneously lurking here, the difference is as vast as that between a bus station crack-whore mental patient and Mother Teresa. Or something.

I've spoken with this individual. He doesn't post on .com all that much and I believe he lurks here. His sources seem to be fairly legit.

When I inquired about forthcoming criterions via private messaging, he told me that Wise Blood was coming out in May or June. So I would not be at all surprised if the Huston film is included whenever the solicts go up. If not then June it is! (With the assumption that his sources have continued to be accurate) I believe he said that The Fire Within by Malle would also be a May/June release.

Wise Blood is currently being worked on, but not for DVD release. It will first play on TCM later this year, or so my source says.

The Fire Within, Before the Rain, Second Breath, Bottle Rocket are all titles that I've been told had been scheduled for the May/June time period... but then this was a while ago and I assume the release dates have been moved around.

Hmm. He mentioned Melville's Second Breath to me as well. Maybe Wise Blood will debut on TCM in May/June then.

Hard to tell. Personally I'm more of an atheist who likes beer and sex. This middle ground reflects my attitude towards the two forums as well. I lurk on both sites but definitely come here more often. I come here for interesting information and insight. I go there to feel better about myself.

I do find it hard sometimes to resist the fan-boy urge to crow about my collection, but just a quick trip to a relevant thread on .com eliminates that pretty quick. Just the sheer banality and superficiality of it all is embarrassing. So I come back here where 90% of my measly posts are met with silence so deafening even the crickets uncross their legs.

Oh well, keep up the good work. I'll keep learning and lurking. This truly is a great forum.
