If that's a gourd, then it ought to narrow the possible titles considerably! Don't they use gourds to drink from in Jim McBride's GLEN AND RANDA? And don't they have a car's bumper-grill over a fire pit since they don't know what it originally was for . . . ??? Haven't seen it in a long time...

Would this be a possibility? Do Criterion love the Breathless remake, David Holzman's Diary, and young-ish Dennis Quaid enough to release this in their stead? Sounds like it would fit in with their Border Radio/Walker/Jubilee-type releases. And maybe they could get Robert Redford to explain his love of the movie...

GLEN AND RANDA has a 1.6 imdb rating. I say it's TRAFFIC.

I saw that imdb rating on Glen and Randa too, but some of CC's releases, Border Radio in particular, have me convinced that there's no depths to which Criterion won't go, especially if it's a cult movie by a director of any note. And the comments left on the boards suggest that, though not a masterpiece by any definition, it's not 1.6 horrible

Stop being distracted by the Gourd. It's no more relevant than the parade of Wacky Animals in past newsletters. Perhaps we've moved into the era of the Wacky Fruit Clue.

What about the "bumper-grill bbq"? Do any other movies really account for that (Trafic included) beyond Walkabout (and that's just a car on fire, not a bbq as such)?

Mind blowing. Now if only my junior jumble weren't laminated...

To clarify (though maybe you intended it as such): I thought you were implying that the bbq Criterion was inviting us to would feature a certain canine as the main course...but that makes no sense.

Isn't there a BBQ scene in Goodfellas? Internet rumors start... now.

"AT Theaters Soon"

What? Do we have a "Worst Movie Posters Ever" topic?

I think it would be cool to have Trafic. Just think...you could have a Criterion Double Feature with Traffic AND Trafic! :D  #-o

Yes, I agree this clue is for Tatis' Trafic -- that really makes my day. Totally love this film! Now if they'd only release Jour de fete, we'd be all set...

Fuck, guys. May be the fine folks at CC are just throwing a BBQ party, and we're all invited. Instead of wasting time looking up fruits, we should RSVP.

This could be a problem.

I don't know any good recipes involving gourds. I do a pear salad with goat cheese and hazelnuts, but since we decided it was a gourd, I'm totally at a loss. I suppose I could always do something a little less topical with pumpkin seeds... or maybe I'll just bring a flan. You can never have too much flan at a barbecue.

What to bring, what to bring.... ?

When was the last time Criterion obtained the dvd rights from New Yorker video?

I say it's gotta be Trafic
I don't buy that it's Weekend, as New Yorker just dropped that disc in the very recent past. But, to answer your question, Criterion acquired the rights to the Sans Soleil from New Yorker.

Well "bumper-grill" makes more sense watching that: the grill is obvious, and the car's bumper has the heating element in it.

Well Trafic seems pretty conclusive.... BUT..
the driver in 'Vanishing Point' was out of his gourd and ended up as spit roast.

By the way have I missed something elsewhere?? What Claude Sautet is being referred to??
