very exciting, the most beautiful artwork I've seen from any label, though Fantastic Planet was also superb and MoC are always great (except Vengeance is Mine #-o ). having seen pandora's box and l'armee des ombres, 2 blind buys coming up

Why has the MOC-banner changed colour on Spione and Onibaba?

They've been repressed. Disc content is identical. The booklets are almost identical (ONIBABA now has a red booklet cover) and the banner has changed colour.

Will they have "Second Printing" printed on them?

No, I think we'd only do that if the disc content changed.

I like the revised banner colours. They are more consistent with the poster art now.

Don't wish to jump the gun on anything here, but I might as well ask - is this something that we can expect in the future?

Guess I'm just asking in what circumstances you'd change the disc content (i'm guessing if a major extra was uncovered or something like that). Also would there be a replacement scheme in effect for people who already splashed out on the initial disc?

Nick, is this MoC policy now? To change banner covers for each printing?

Love Silence de la Mer cover - lovely.

Customer review at amazon.co.uk for General Idi Amin Dada takes issue with the cover:
Why only four stars? I'd say that the use of such an unpleasant and grotesquely racist caricature as that which adorns the front cover is a huge let-down - a miscalculation bordering on disgrace. If you can get hold of the original Criterion DVD release you might want to do so - it's exactly the same film minus the nasty cover.

Irony of all ironies: a culturally sensitive caricature of Idi Ami? (Not to generalise, but that comment is just fucking naïve, and totally not-in-context.)

I vote for a HUGE printout of this to be delivered to said customer…that'll make him view the MoC cover artwork in a new light.

There's nothing racist about the caricature used on the MoC sleeve. If it's racist then all caricatures are racist. The amazon customer's political correctness is borderline hysteria.

What does everyone think of the Bellissima cover art?

The cover artwork reminds me of Don Bachardy's work, does anyone know the artist?

I think it's is ok, the kind of thing that might grow on me, it just doesn't seem to convey that darkness that it's the film. I don't think it should be explicit but subtle, more melancholic. I also think that the original title art 'Bellissima' doesn't go with the new artwork.

I found quite a nice poster:

Thoughts anyone?

Criterion eat your heart out. This is how cover art should be done.

When you have Miyagawa's cinematography to work with -- creating a striking cover should not be an overly difficult task.

all the same, good work MOC.

Love the latest additions but this one just looks nice and does not trigger me in any way. I have the same problem when Criterion use a still and do not "work it". Gonna buy it anyway as MoC movies never disappoint me!

I like how Nick was able to include both the original Japanese and English film title on the "Silence" artwork, in a way that does them both justice.

Truly beautiful. If MoC ever decides to do merchandising a la Criterion (you know, t-shirts, hats etc.), this one should be released as a large poster. Can't wait to get the disc.

I rarely care enough about cover-art to actually bother others with my opinion of it but these last few designs by MoC are of such a high standard, I can't help giving Nick and the MoC guys some virtual applause.

And to further Tommaso's suggestion, I would certainly pay good money for any posters of the UFA films MoC have been able to release. Unless I win the lottery, the original artwork for Asphalt, Die Nibelungen or Spione won't be on my wall any time soon...
