Ford at Fox: 21 Disc Collection

Hopefully this all pans out, although the apparent $300 price tag is a bit daunting.

Never thought I'd see Fox going the Criterion route. Daunting is the word.

This is absolutely incredible news. Fox was the last studio I would have expected to see releasing silent films (Sunrise still has never been made available as in individual release in R1). I won't buy it myself, but it's a no-brainer as a purchase for the library collection.

I'm pathetically grateful, but this is one of those announcements that convinces me that I'll never understand the 'logic' of major studio DVD divisions.

The $300 list price will probably amount to an actual retail price around $150-175 which isn't too bad at all. If this is true, very awesome news from Fox.

I doubt they'll be rereleasing Young Mr. Lincoln in this set.

Steamboat Round the Bend was a pleasant surprise when it came out in that Will Rogers set last year.

I think it would be silly not to release it in this set. I mean I love the Criterion, but it is one of the Fox gems.

Would that force the Criterion out of print, or do you think the agreement between Fox and Criterion would allow for it to be released from both companies?

A simple solution would be to make Young Mr Lincoln a more basic edition (e.g. film only) and only available in the box set, which would present next to no competition with the existing Criterion edition while also enhancing the comprehensiveness of this set.

This set is still in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category for me, but my fingers are crossed.
