In view of Nigel Kneale's passing, I'm looking to buy the R2 DVDs of THE YEAR OF THE SEX OLYMPICS (1968; BFI) and the 3-Disc QUATERMASS (1979; Clear Vision) but can't seem to find them available anywhere online! Can anyone help me in getting hold of these two TV shows?

Looks like they're going OOP. You might want to grab them from Amazon UK's Marketplace while you can. Prices still seem reasonable for SEX OLYMPICS.

THE STONE TAPE (Peter Sasdy)

UK. 1972. col. 90 mins. cert PG. DVD.

Nigel Kneale also wrote this classic ghost story, available on dvd from the bfi (PAL) at £19.95.

A team of scientists, researching a new recording medium, take over an Old Dark House and discover that something nasty lurks beneath the stonework. Science meets supernatural in this chilling 1970s cult classic.

The DVD features a commentary by Nigel Kneale in conversation with Kim Newman and on-screen filmographies. Extra ROM content features printable scripts of Nigel Kneale's The Road and The Stone Tape.

I haven't got this yet, but in addition to his BBC work Kneale's ITV series Beasts is also supposed to be very good and is out on a Region 2 two disc set.

The Stone Tape commentary is excellent by the way, and the story was very interesting even if I was more frightened by the 70s fashions and Michael Bryant's shouty performance and bursts into an Irish accent(!), but I guess that is more 70s television acting than the actor being bad(?) I used to think Jane Asher's reaction to the reversing truck at the beginning was way over the top, but since I've been learning to drive I find myself having a similar reaction and doing the same kind of thing she does! She struck me as playing a similar character to that played by Claire Bloom in the good version of The Haunting!

DVD Times reviews of The Stone Tape and The Year of the Sex Olympics
