The Graduate: grabs from the Italian (Studio Canal) BD:
(compare with http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare/graduate.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
MGM and Studio Canal have done completely different transfers, but the Studio Canal seems to me very, uselessly green and is quite cropped. That's a shame. Probably, the UK BD (september 13th) will look like this, since it comes from Studio Canal.

If you mean this, it's not Studio Canal but Universal. Anyway, SC releases get out almost simultaneously in Europe, there is no way Italy got this 2 months earlier...

Re: Screen Captures (5-6 per post + links to additional imag
This is a strange case actually, since the French SC BD was issued in June 2009 (the Italian one in September).
(this is the actual cover-> )
It's Studio Canal/Universal, trust me; like The Deer Hunter BD (in Italy, there's this kind of "co-production") which is the same Optimum/Kinowelt disc. In fact, the BD transfer of The Graduate is identical to Studio Canal/Optimum's (the DVD, I mean).
I sincerely hope Optimum will make a better transfer, but it' not very likely.
Cheers!

Re: Screen Captures (5-6 per post + links to additional imag
Yes, but Deer Hunter is out on blu-ray by SC exclusively. On The Graduate case the MGM blu-ray is already out, so Universal might have used their transfer. Is the Italian BD MPEG2?

Nope, it's VC1 like the French BD and most likely the same disc.

Nooo! Interlaced, innit??? And I see absolutely no improvement over the DVD. Such a letdown.Rowan wrote:More caps (resized):

Try stretching the dvd image to match the same size as the BD caps and you'll see a difference!
I think it looks great.

Aye, but it's very very minimal! Oh, anyway, the DVD was superb, so the improvement is not so noticeable.Peacock wrote:Try stretching the dvd image to match the same size as the BD caps and you'll see a difference!

Maybe you're joking, but that's not interlacing, it's an optical effect.
Many thanks, Rowan! This appears to be much better than I feared.

Sorry, I've seen it only once, I can recall nothing! I'm glad it's only an effect.

Re: Screen Captures (5-6 per post + links to additional imag
Dan, I thought you were kidding! Yes it's film effect. If it was interlacing, it would be the worst example of it EVER
I posted some impressions in the Studio Canal thread. In motion, especially on the projector, the blu makes all the difference - isn't that what the format is really about?
Point is, this isn't the disaster it could've been and many feared (see HDDVD).

India Song by Marguerite Duras. Scandinavian DVD from Atlantic Film, 2010. PAL format; most likely region 2; French audio; optional subtitles in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish; no special features. Looks open-matte to me.
I've used Totem Movie Player in Ubuntu to take these captures, and I have no idea if that program is actually any good. I'm fairly sure I've never changed any of its settings, for what it's worth.

Might as well do this too while I'm at it...
Taking Off by Milos Forman. Scandinavian DVD from Studio S Entertainment, 2010. PAL format, anamorphic; most likely region 2; English audio; optional subtitles in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish; no significant special features.
Same caveats re. software as in previous post.
