Oriental Elegy (Aleksandr Sokurov, 1996)
How did this slide under the radar?
After years of checking regularly for Sokurov DVD releases, I let it slide a few months, and soon as I look up, Oriental Elegy has been out for a month on a disc with A Humble Life and Dolce?
Absurd! But I'm glad.

No idea why this release hasn't been mentioned in the usual places either, but I ordered a copy after stumbling across it a couple of weeks ago. Haven't watched the films all the way through yet, but the transfers look superb - buy with confidence!

Just got round to watching these at last. A Humble Life is a total masterpiece, and Dolce has the weirdest aspect ratio I have ever seen. Transfers are as good as they appeared to be on sampling, and the level of detail on the soundtracks (wind, movement of insects, creaking of boards) is stunning.
JC, you've been quiet lately...

Yeah it does. It reminded me of (might've been on an older incarnation of the forum) Matt once asking if there were any films with an aspect ratio taller than they are wide, and wondering something along the lines of 'if cinemascope is "only good for filming snakes and funerals", what would a tall aspect ratio be good for, giraffes and skyscrapers?'
