Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola, 2009)

Coppola's next film is scheduled to begin filming January or early February.

From a recent interview with Coppola:
"It's [Tetro's] the name of a character. It's very personal, kind of my Tennessee Williams period," he says. "I want to make a passionate story about brothers and fathers and all of that different tumult that I've seen at different times in my life — a little bit stuff I've seen in my family, but it's totally fictional."
And a little bit from a user on IMDB:
I heard an interview with Coppola this past week on NPR and he said that Matt Dillon, who was previously announced as lead, is definitely out. He said it's because of a scheduling conflict. The film was supposed to start shooting already but because Coppola is promoting Youth Without Youth he had to postpone the beginning of the shoot for Tetro. He said that the replacement and the rest of the cast should be announced soon (I have heard Maribel Verdu, Javier Bardem and Rodrigo de la Serna are all possibilities).
Matt Dillon was very good in The Outsiders and Rumble Fish and it would've been interesting to see them working together again. What that said, I do look forward to hearing who the replacement is. Although the source is questionable, according to IMDB composer Osvaldo Golijov and cinematographer Mihai Malaimare are back on board (both also worked on Youth Without Youth).

woah.
I do love Gallo (Mark Romanek described him as 'the most photogenic person ever'), and I'd love to see how Coppola handles him. let's hope the movie is good. It is good to see that Gallo is working again (I thought he'd just fallen back onto selling his semen online as a source of income).

Nice article about Coppola's new found inspiration to film in Argentina.

He also denies reports that the script was stolen:
His stay hasn’t all been pleasant - his studio was robbed in September by thieves who stole computers and even his backup data system.

Coppola made an unsuccessful public appeal for their return, but said his script for Tetro was never stolen, contrary to local press reports.

“They never stole the original script,” he says.

“They took the computers and the backup, but they only took photographs, only for the last year-and-a-half.”

Wow, Vincent Gallo is the lead? Inspired, gutsy casting. I wonder how well he and Coppola will work together? Hopefully there will be a fly-on-the-wall documentary made around the production so we can see the dynamics.

I also can't wait for more Malaimare cinematography and another Golijov score - both did absolutely sensational work on Youth Without Youth.

I bet it won't be as good as The Witnesses.

Are you sure you're not Armond?

The film has run into union trouble.

The film gets a website with a really nice video introduction by FFC, as well as a June 11th release date. It will be distributed by American Zoetrope so I would guess that means it will be limited.

Sounds very promising. It wasn't perfect, but I was one of the very few who liked Youth Without Youth, so I'm excited about this not only as a career follow-up (as I noted above Tetro utilizes much of the same crew as Youth, including the brilliant composer and DP) but as the very intriguing project Coppola speaks of in that video. Can't wait for a trailer.

I also really enjoyed Youth Without Youth.

It's great to see Coppola back and putting out films on a consistent basis.

I pray it's good. But after Youth Without Youth I live in fear. That was one unbelievably gorgeous muddle of a film.

I enjoyed Youth Without Youth, however I feel the movie suffered in its length. The ending seemed abrupt and almost too convenient. I felt that Tim Roth's character had reached a new conflict that would have been interesting to see developed further. It almost felt unfinished.

Glad to see Coppola finally getting back into filmmaking on a more regular basis...and back to interesting, more personal items rather than cookie-cutter studio projects such as "Jack" and "The Rainmaker." I've always regarded him as sort of the Brian Wilson of the movie world ("Apocalypse Now" being his Smile), and it's looking as though he's making a 21st century comeback akin to Wilson's as well.

I hope he makes Megalopolis eventually. The story, as I heard it years before, sounded very intriguing.

Coppola turns down Cannes because they wanted to screen the film out of competition.

It looks beautiful, but I really hope the acting isn't as bad as it is in the trailer.

=D> Wow! This is the best trailer I've seen in years. Gorgeous, striking images, amazing music, a very Tennessee Williams/Luchino Visconti esque hothouse family drama and Vincent Gallo looks wonderful.

I'll be seeing this in Seattle in a month with Coppola and Gallo in attendance, and you can be sure I'll let everybody know what I think. Looking forward to it!

The synopsis of "Youth Without Youth" clouded my head with a marvelous film that would touch on several ideas of particular interest to me... and I saw it, and roll snare drum: "how could this be the same filmmaker who delivered The Rain People and Apocalypse Now?"

It cemented, for me at least, that Coppola was beyond any help. Then I see this trailer, and it's hard for me to believe that this could be anything less than a remarkable return to form, even if each shot we just saw was the summation of every golden moment the picture has, whatever's in between could not possibly stink this up too bad.

Um...that was not what I was expecting. I felt like I was watching a trailer for the team up of Anderson and Lynch. I hope that is a good thing.
