Ford at Fox: 21 Disc Collection
Hopefully this all pans out, although the apparent $300 price tag is a bit daunting.

Never thought I'd see Fox going the Criterion route. Daunting
is the word.

This is absolutely incredible news. Fox was the last studio I would have expected to see releasing silent films (Sunrise still has never been made available as in individual release in R1). I won't buy it myself, but it's a no-brainer as a purchase for the library collection.

I'm pathetically grateful, but this is one of those announcements that convinces me that I'll never understand the 'logic' of major studio DVD divisions.

You really do have to laugh at that reality.

This is thrilling news! I know how you all feel. Have acquired quite a few of these films on the grapevine already. Muchos gracias and props to 20th C-Fox if this is true.

The $300 list price will probably amount to an actual retail price around $150-175 which isn't too bad at all. If this is true, very awesome news from Fox.

Colour me astonished. I was hoping for more Ford from Criterion so they'd at least give us the second half of that BBC Lindsay Anderson doco.
But this appears to be beyond my wildest dreams.

Here's my guess: I've put them in order of which I know the most about, and arbitrarily grouped the silents at the bottom. Anyone think I might be close?
1. Young Mr. Lincoln (1939)
2. Grapes of Wrath, The (1940)
3. How Green Was My Valley (1941)
4. Drums Along the Mohawk (1939)
5. My Darling Clementine (1946)
6. Judge Priest (1934)
7. Tobacco Road (1941)
8. Prisoner of Shark Island, The (1936)
9. Men Without Women (1930)
10. Brat, The (1931)
11. World Moves On, The (1934) First film to be ok'd by hays office.
12. Doctor Bull (1933)
13. Four Men and a Prayer (1938)
14. Pilgrimage (1933) Worth checking out.
15. Seas Beneath (1931) OK
16. Steamboat Round the Bend (1935) Will Rogers swansong, comedy.
17. Submarine Patrol (1938)
18. Up the River (1930)
19. Wee Willie Winkie (1937) Ford's Shirley Temple.
20. When Willie Comes Marching Home (1950) weird, apparently.
21. North of Hudson Bay (1923)
22. 3 Bad Men (1926)
23. Four Sons (1928)
24. Hangman's House (1928)
25. Iron Horse, The (1924)
26. Riley the Cop (1928)

I doubt they'll be rereleasing Young Mr. Lincoln in this set.
Steamboat Round the Bend was a pleasant surprise when it came out in that Will Rogers set last year.

I think it would be silly not to release it in this set. I mean I love the Criterion, but it is one of the Fox gems.

Would that force the Criterion out of print, or do you think the agreement between Fox and Criterion would allow for it to be released from both companies?

A simple solution would be to make Young Mr Lincoln a more basic edition (e.g. film only) and only available in the box set, which would present next to no competition with the existing Criterion edition while also enhancing the comprehensiveness of this set.
This set is still in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category for me, but my fingers are crossed.

I really hope Wee Willie Winkie is tinted like a silent film as it was originally presented in theaters.

At last, I hope we get We Willie Winkie, perhaps Ford's most underrated film by cinephiles.

Well, it's definitely coming: Fox announce it at the bottom of
this page.

If it's half as good as I imagine it will be, then damn the cost, the import duty, the Royal Mail 'handling charge', the slog down to the depot to pick the bloody thing up - well, I can honestly hardly wait...

Interesting read, thanks Jeff.
I'm really looking forward to this box! I wish they'd hurry up and officially announce the titles.
