From Lionsgate on August 7. $29.95 list price. Here's a link, but there's no titles listed, so let the guessing begin!

Same price as the Renoir box, so I assume a 3 disc set again, with perhaps six films. Take away all those released by Criterion, and speculate on... I'd love to see a new transfer of "Chien andalou" and "L'age d'or", for example, as I still missed out on that BFI set as it's ridiculously expensive.

Here come the Mexican films! This'll be exciting.

Most likelies:

Belle de jour
Hurdes
Joven

Those are my guesses. Angel and Simon and Tristana are all owned by Janus. Milky Way is Rialto, and Olvidados is Koch (most likely).

By the way, did they table the Godard to piss me off?

Actually, something tells me Lionsgate will piss us all off and fill it with Criterion titles.

Doesn't Kino own Las Hurdes?

Oh bugger! Those are the ones I'd like the most, particularly Simon. Pretty much any of the Mexican films would be great though.

Belle de Jour is own by Miramax. Most likely this set would include some of these titles:

The Young One
Nazarín
Muerte en el jardín
Ensayo de un crimen
Robinson Crusoe - OOP by VCI
Abismos de pasión
La Ilusión viaja en tranvía
El
El Bruto
Una mujer sin amor
Subida al cielo - Buñuel worst?
Susana

I thought Miramax only owned Scorsese's print, not necessarily Studio Canal's print -- or is that incorrect?

Also, I don't believe Kino owns Hurdes, I believe they only own L'Age d'or. I emailed them a while ago about releasing more Bunuel and they said they didn't have plans.

As for all those Mexican titles, I unfortunately doubt it. It would be awesome, but this box set is stemming from the Studio Canal deal, and I don't believe Studio Canal owns any of his Mexican works.

Instead, I'll retract a previous statement and wonder if the new box set would feature Tristana or Milky Way, since Criterion has been sitting on those titles forever, and maybe they just didn't care to ever release them.

Your probably right. Here's the french Studio Canal collection:

- Belle de jour
- Tristana
- La voie lactée
- Le journal d'une femme de chambre
- Cet obscur objet du désir
- La jeune fille
- Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie
- Le fantôme de la liberté
- Gran Casino

From this list we can erase Le journal d'une femme de chambre, Cet obscur objet du désir, Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, Le fantôme de la liberté since they're in print by Criterion. So that leave us with:

- Belle de jour
- Tristana
- La voie lactée
- La jeune fille
- Gran Casino

Which would make sense, right?

Would Criterion really give up/license out any Bunuels they have the rights to? Even if for some reason they didn't want to do full-on Criterion releases of Milky Way and Tristana (and why wouldn't they, given that they are both relatively major latter-day Bunuel titles, plus Tristana has Deneuve factor to help sell it) isn't that what Eclipse is for? My money's on all '50s-era Mexican titles.

Again, unless Studio Canal owns the Mexican titles, they will not be in the Lionsgate box.

Also, keep in mind that a new print of Milky Way has been ready to go for quite some time now from Rialto, and yet Criterion hasn't released it. I also doubt Criterion would ever license it out, but it may explain why it's been sitting on their shelf for over two years now. And notice that the price is much higher than the Renoir box.

Or, it could it be that this set will only feature 3 or 4 titles?

Belle de Jour
The Young One
Gran Casino
Land Without Bread

I'd be happy with that. It would mean that Criterion releases are still on the way.

This set has the same RSP$ 29.95 as the Renoir. The Hitchcock set is $39.95.

You're right. Sorry about that. I paid 19 for the box and just had that price in my head.

I don't care what's in it. It's Bunuel and it's $20 (after discount), so I'm buying it.

The "Forthcoming Criterion" list states that Kim Hendrickson has confirmed that Criterion is releasing "The Milky Way" in 2007, so it is probably safe to say it will not be in the Lionsgate box.

Edit: And now (several hours later) we know "The Milky Way" is coming from Criterion in August. So there you have it.

--CONFIRMED: GRAN CASINO AND LA JOVEN ONLY--

My contact at Lionsgate confirmed there will only be two titles. However, there was an implication that there would be another Bunuel boxset at some point.

I assume the Miramax DVD of BELLE DE JOUR will go out of print at which point Lionsgate will release their better quality print.

GRAN CASINO was Bunuel's first film in Mexico in the late 40s and he certainly had little love for it. Unlike the films he would make in Mexico over the next several years, there is little of Bunuel's savage subtlety floating around the edges of the film. It's best known for a scene in which the two leads kiss and Bunuel cuts away to a stick stirring a puddle of mud or motor oil.

LA JOVEN (THE YOUNG ONE) is an entirely different beast. Shot in English, it features Zachary Scott and the otherwise unknown Key Meersman in the Lolita role. It's been several years since I've seen this, but it struck me as quite mesmerizing.

I hope the other Mexican Bunuels get their due on DVD soon. Perhaps interest in this release will hurry the next ones along.

I saw this recently actually. The sexual dynamics of the film are quite awesome, but it's amazing how uninteresting Bunuel treats the racial tensions. I may need to see it again, but this felt very much like two different films: one terrific, and one so-so.

Who holds the rights for Los Olvidados? I have the Mexican release, which has a very fine print, but I will like to see if an R1 release can top it.
