No-one seems to have started a thread for this recent UK based outfit - Drakes Avenue.
web site here
Here are some highlights from their web site:
CAFÉ LUMIÈRE
KITCHEN STORIES - saw this in Norway and found it wonderfuly dry humour
KONTROLL - big Hungarian hit of 2003
SOPHIE SCHOLL
TURTLES CAN FLY - this film was abig disappointment for me and in no way compared to the earlier Time for Drunken Horses

The only film from this outfit that I posess is Sophie Scholl. The picture quality was crisp and clear, but unfotunately the aspect ratio is 4:3 (non-anamorphic). Still it is a powerful film and worth watching for the strength of the lead performances. Though apparently there is a fair bit of hagiography going on with the mythologising of Sophie.

Interested to hear feedback as to what others make of Drakes Avenue?

Drakes Avenue is the DVD publishing wing of the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts), the London-based distributor for many foreign films which rarely make it to the provinces, and also a venue for fairly vacuous installation art. The DVDs are generally bare-bones affairs, but with acceptable transfer quality. The list of titles is somewhat eccentric, consisting of the sort of stuff not mopped up by Artificial Eye.

So Kay, would you say that there is a good chance that this outfit will bring Hsiao-hsien, Ming-liang, Anh Hung and the like to R2 UK within the next 2-3 years...

well, all I can say is that they already have brought out Hsiao-Hsien's Cafe Lumiere (2004) :)

As to Anh Hung - the wonderful The Scent Of Green Papaya (1993) is already out on r2 - release by SECOND SIGHT FILMS LTD here
and At The Height Of Summer (2000) is out on AE here
