....
To summarize the November contest proposed solutions:

Jean Renoir to Jack Palance

1. Jean Renoir
Elena and Her Men
2. Jean Marais
The Testament of Orpheus
3. Brigitte Bardot
Contempt
4. Jack Palance

Monica Vitti to Cary Grant

1. Monica Vitti
The Phantom of Liberty
2. Michel Piccoli
French Cancan
3. Jacques Marin*
Charade
4. Cary Grant

*Though technically present according to IMDb, Jacques Marin's uncredited role in French Cancan was as a spectator. For that reason, I doubt that this is the solution that the CC folks had in mind.

OR:

1. Monica Vitti
The Phantom of Liberty
2. Michel Piccoli
French Cancan
3. Jean Renoir
Elena and Her Men
4. Ingrid Bergman
Notorious
5. Cary Grant

Tony Curtis to Pier Paolo Pasolini

1. Tony Curtis
Spartacus
2. Laurence Olivier
Henry V
3. Ralph Truman
The Golden Coach
4. Anna Magnani
Mamma Roma
5. Pier Paolo Pasolini

I just noticed that each of the linkings above involve a different film from the Renoir box set. Maybe that should have been the prise.

I noticed that too. This contest proves that Renoir is the center of Criterion's universe.

Jean Renoir to Jack Palance

Jean Renoir directed French Cancan.
Michel Piccoli appeared in French Cancan.
Michel Piccoli also appeared in Contempt.
Jack Palance appeared in Contempt.

Doesn't the game (like the Kevin Bacon game) only call for 6 at most? My understanding was you could do it in less.

"Using only Criterion films, link each pair of names below so that the complete chain is no more than six people. "

You can do all of them with four or less.

Here is my take (6 names):
1. Tony Curtis appeared in Spartacus with Jean Simmons.
2. Jean Simmons appeared in Great Expectations directed by David Lean.
3. David Lean directed Oliver Twist with Ralph Truman.
4. Ralph Truman appeared in The Golden Coach with Anna Magnani.
5. Anna Magnani appeared in Mamma Roma directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini

Fantastic news -- I'll be able to replace the old editions I sold a while back in anticipation of this. Still, very disappointing not to see High and Low in that little speech bubble.

Personally, I'd rather see H&L in there in place of Sanjuro, but as long as it's on the Horizon, I'll take Sanjuro.

Actually, it would be nice to have Yojimbo and Sanjuro as a double release, but I can't see that happening.

Presumably each of these will include their respective It Is Wonderful to Create episodes, and conceivably Nakadai reminisced about Yojimbo and Sanjuro (and, hey, maybe even his couple of seconds in Seven Samurai) during the recent bout of interviews.

I'm so glad I waited on Yojimbo and Sanjuro along with seven samurai. I think next year will be Kurosawa year for me, I'll get these and pick up some of the others I haven't seen.

So where are those promotions on DVDempire that the newsletter was talking about?

the past couple of years DVD Empire has had a "Criterion Christmas" where select titles have been heavily discounted, but no sign of that so far this year

I'm starting to wonder...seeing how there's no real need for new DVDs of Red Beard, Throne of Blood, Hidden Fortress and Rashomon, might Criterion compile the respective It's Wonderful to Create episodes as a supplementary disc for one of the forthcoming Kurosawa discs?

Quoth the new Criterion Newsletter -

'Alert! Look for new editions of SEVEN SAMURAI, SANJURO and YOJIMBO in 2006!'

Samurai and most particularly Kurosawa titles obviously sell so well that this is a no brainer...

Not only that, but YOJIMBO may the single CC title in greatest need of a remaster. It's a mess.

Ah...finally, I traded mine ages ago when these rumors started up first. And have been waiting since. Heck, they just make a double disc package out of Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Would anyone buy one without the other?!

Can someone please post the url of the online newsletter? My email came through as a poorly formatted mess which is strange considering the other letters came through fine.

Mine came through as a mess as well, so I just clicked on "printable view" and it solved the problem.

Mine, too. Something must have gone awry this month since so many of us saw this issue.

Ah! Mystery solved. I just received a new version of the Newsletter with this addendum added to the top:

"It has come to our attention that our newsletter is unreadable in Yahoo this month. As a courtesy, we are resending this to those of you using Yahoo's email service. Happy reading and keep those comments coming!"

Actually, after posting the above I was thinking that this strategy would make sense for a high-profile rerelease of Seven Samurai (surely their flagship Kurosawa title), to publicise the rest of their catalogue in the manner of the Bergman intros on Fanny & Alexander.
