Horror legend George A Romero (
Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead) directs Jason Flemyng (
Snatch, Pennyworth), Peter Stormare (
Fargo), and Leslie Hope (
24) in the devastating and deranged
Bruiser.
Unhappy with both his homelife and his career, Henry (Flemyng) is plagued by violent fantasies. When he wakes up to find his face replaced by a featureless mask, he sets about exacting violent punishment on those who have wronged him.
Featuring music by celebrated composer Donald Rubinstein (
Martin, Knightriders), and including an appearance by legendary punk band the Misfits, Bruiser was hailed by critics and fans alike as a triumphant return to independent filmmaking for Romero.

It's very much Romero revisiting There's Always Vanilla and Season of the Witch with additional horror trappings visually. Starts off strong, but by the end I'd gone off it.

I hated this. Its concept - unhappy working man exacts pent-up violent 'revenge' on everyone around him as a form of "standing up for myself" - is tired and been done a million times better in films that aren't even very good. Romero doesn't even bring strong filmmaking skills to the table, everything just feels phoned in across the board. You can tell that some of the actors try to ascend the material with genuinely effortful perfs, but they simply can't

Yet, surprisingly, Romero thought this was his best directed film

I must admit that it has been a long time since I saw Bruiser but I think it is best approached as Romero kind of doing an unofficial re-take on (reclamation of?) his ill fated 1993 adaptation of Stephen King's
The Dark Half, both of which share certain thematic similarities of disconnected 'toxic masculinity'. In a way The Dark Half and Bruiser kind of bookend that 'wilderness' phase of Romero's career. Although of course during the in between time he did do the
live action trailer for the Japanese release of the Resident Evil 2 video game with a surprise leading role for Brad Renfro!

Politicians, ugly buildings, whores and shoddy horror movies all get respectable if they last long enough.

I mean regardless of status or actual quality, it’s still a film by one of the most respected horror directors of all time with a lot of new extras and in 4K no less so it shouldn’t be surprising that it’s been selling like hotcakes.

And it's fast-selling titles like this that end up underwriting riskier projects.
