New Wave Films announced that they will release a Ceylan box set this autumn with "all 8 features on Blu plus Koza and extras". I'd expect this to have good English subs and hopefully fix those 1080i transfers from the French Memento set.

Wow, did not expect that since AE released some of the older films on DVD.

I wasn't going to get this until I realized more than half of Ceylan's films were DVD only, and I've never seen three of them.

Which ones are those?

I wish they'd release the earlier ones in separate editions as I already have the most recent ones and don't really want a copy of Three Monkeys either way. Kasaba remains my favorite Ceylan however and I would love to have a Blu copy of both that and its follow up/companion piece Clouds of May. As to the extras, I have to note that I was pretty disappointed with the New Wave release of Wild Pear Tree in that regard as it includes only a trailer and I had to purchase it to find out since there was no information available online anywhere.

Mmm, some labels (not just home video) are weirdly reticent in advertising the details of a release, which is made all the harder if no one’s posted a useful review.

How does Once Upon a Time in Anatolia compare to the rest of Ceylan’s filmography. It’s the only one I’ve seen so far & I think I recall appreciating more than enjoying it - not quite so much that I’m eager to grab the box set when it’s released anyway.

I would probably put Anatolia in the top tier of his films, if maybe near the bottom of that level. His more recent two films (Winter Sleep, The Wild Pear Tree) have shifted gears towards extreme talkiness; they are what I would characterize as novelistic character studies that will either work great for you (as they do for me) or be sheer torture. I'm tempted to say that Anatolia is somewhat of a bridge between these different periods.

His films prior to that are more concerned with landscapes and aesthetics in general; there's much more screentime given to establishing mood and atmosphere in films like Uzak and Climates (Uzak has a funny nod to Tarkovsky at one point). Of course these tendencies are still present in the later films, but the richness and exhaustiveness of the character studies in his recent work is something a little different for Ceylan. I find that these newer films really stick with me for days and weeks afterwards, and usually improve quite a bit in my overall estimation once I've had some time to digest them.

I recall enjoying Winter Sleep for a while, especially because of it's beauty and Checkhovian undertones, but then 2 and a half hours passed and the film was still not close to ending... And sadly the overt talkiness did bother me after a while. I should probably rewatch it though

I think Anatolia is truly great (it's easily my second favorite) but it really does seem to fall into a different phase of his work (or a transitional one as noted). And as much as I love the novelistic qualities of it I have to concede that I never finished Winter Sleep. I got about an hour into it and finally just had enough. Always meant to return to it (and will) but just haven't yet.

I had a conversation with a Turkish film buff on another forum, and he asserted that this is generally considered his best in Turkey. It's probably his best known in the U.S.

Thanks all (especially Oedipax for the thoughtful response). Not sure I'm any closer to a decision - may just have to hunt down some more films of his elsewhere first. I almost watched Winter Sleep recently, but had to return the disc. Still, I'm definitely curious.

I've heard good things about his earlier films and I've been meaning to check them out so I'd say you should as well. But I will wait before blind buying this though

New Wave have confirmed to a Blu-Ray.com member that it will be an 8 disc set.

Amazon UK has this for pre-order at around $56. I thought it might be worth locking in the price before it gets updated from 4 discs to 8.

It’s 51.92. Minus VAT it comes to 46.32 with the cheapest shipping, ie $56 US at today’s conversion rate

Why is it so hard to find this information in the UK? The only sites I've found that reliably disclose this information are Base and Zavvi

I wouldn't be surprised if some labels don't even have a RRP for their releases. It's not a particularly strong concept in our retail nowadays. Discounts have to be shown based on an recent higher price, not a theoretical RRP which an item is never ever sold at. You'd find yourself in trouble here if you attempted to do a 50% off Criterion sale like B&N and Criterion themselves do, when it's only 50% of the RRP and not 50% of what the item was sold for previously.

RRPs have also been outlawed at various time in various UK retail sectors.
