Terrence Malick has begun filming on his next project
Reports are coming in that the elusive filmmaker has begun shooting his next film near Rome. Various Italian publications are reporting that Malick has embarked on a shoot for his new film The Last Planet near Anzio, south of Rome, notably in the nature reserve of Tor Caldara. The film will reportedly convey passages “in the life of Christ” through representing evangelical parables. One Big Soul adds that the shoot has actually been underway for a few weeks.

No other details have been unveiled thus far, including if this film is more documentary-based a la Voyage of Time or if an an ensemble of actors will take part, but it’s nice to hear that Malick’s prolific streak has not subsided for what will be his eleventh feature.

I like the thread title’s skepticism that this will be completed within the next 80 years

Not really fair given that he's been one of the most prolific major directors of the decade, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity

You're statement though did lead me to this actual perfume commercial he directed. It's about what you'd expect.

Not enough sexless naval kissing.

I did, it goes to the One Big Soul Facebook page.

EDIT: here's the link to Allocine, the original source, for those who don't have a Facebook account.

It is commendable that Malick can still find funding.

I find Malick ... a bit much, generally, but I’m actually kind of down for another Jesus film. Rylance is a great casting choice, too.

Less of a dark twist than an orange and teal twist.

The "One Big Soul" facebook page says this isn't an official photo, just a set pic from Matthias Schoenaerts' instagram.

Malick's comments from the screening at the Vatican:
We have just finished shooting, I am very happy. A few days ago we finished shooting in the desert of Jordan. [It’s] a multicultural film with a cast that brings together Middle Eastern actors, a German troupe, and even Italian artists in the costumes department and set design (costume designer Carlo Poggioli and production designer Stefano Maria Ortolani). Now I go back to Texas to edit the film. It will take at least a year because we have a lot of material, and since we go digital, we end up with many more images.
I do wonder if he will also start working on the director's cut for To The Wonder during the editing of this film. The Tree of Life director's cut materialized during the editing of A Hidden Life and The New World release was worked on during the editing of Song To Song and Knight of Cups.

"Director's cut"? Wasn't the original a "director's cut"? I don't recall anyone suggesting there was any interference.

He just keeps tinkering with his films-- that just means there are, as is the case with The New World, at least three "director's cuts."

Supposedly Tree of Life was shortened at the request of distributors/producers, the original cut offered was 165 minutes. That facebook page has often had the inside track on Malick stuff (they broke the news on Criterion's releases of The New World and The Tree of Life). They said a while back that Criterion was going to release a longer version of To the Wonder.

Did Kanye West finally stop fucking around with The Life Of Pablo yet? I haven't bothered to check in a while.

Some may applaud this "making the art a living breathing experience" way beyond the initial release date. I'm very happy that the "new" Tree Of Life exists. But where are the limits to this? Does Godard own some extra chapters of Weekend?

there's something about the "open" structures or modularity (which some might intrepret as "aimlessness") of many of his recent films that, I suppose, lends itself to endless tinkering.

I recently saw The Thin Red Line again on the big screen—for the first time in many years—and was struck by how it anticipated many aspects of his "late" films. but also, the sound and image was often combined, quite precisely and carefully over the course of entire scenes or sequences, to generate very pointed, sustained dramatic effects of the kind that his more recent approach seems to foreswear. and IMO the film had a much wider emotional range than anything he's made since.

The IMDB page is pretty spare but the cast and crew is listed. He didn't use Lubezki, instead Jörg Widmer is listed for Cinematography
