God, I couldn't even think about getting out of bed when I got to Eastwood's age, and yet the man has made two movies in the last year.

I just hope it turns out better than the horribly awkward and embarrassing 15:17 To Paris.

I suppose it's on purpose but this picture makes it look as if Eastwood is going to come out the screen à la Last Action Hero.

He has the same sort of weird Midwestern accent Al Pacino had on when he played Kevorkian

I thought Eastwood retired from acting with Gran Torino?

He had the lead role in Trouble with the Curve in 2012.

This is actually his second performance since then. It's just rare for scripts to be written for 90 year olds.

I didn't realize that. That's twice today you've corrected me. Thanks. I could swear he said after GT that he was done with acting and only planned to direct until his final days, probably due to what Knives mentioned.

Wow, this thing is out in wide release a week from today and it doesn't appear that anyone's seen it yet. No festivals, no preview screenings, no critics' screenings, nothing. There are 6 reviews on Letterboxd and they're all people who think they're funny saying like "I HOPE CLINT PUTS THE COKE UP HIS BUTT"

Your posts were both in the form of a question - I wasn't correcting you, I was answering you!

Haha You are correct. That's three now. Don't know what is going on with my brain today. Off to cook dinner. Thanks for the information and have a great evening.

I have to say, from the trailer at least, this looks like the most compelling Eastwood in quite a long time. Although I hope there’s a good narrative reason for why Clint pronounces “pecans” two different ways in the opening section.

Funnily enough down south that's one of the ways they recognize if you're a local. In regards to the film itself I'm quite interested in it myself as I'm a fan of (most) of his work and I think it'll be bolstered by the fact that it's based on a true story. How Eastwood has chosen to represent that reality though, is my main concern.

Oh I know, that's why it caught my ear. I'm probably giving Eastwood too much credit in even hoping it has a narrative purpose - more likely it's just his usual "two takes is plenty" sloppiness.

Or more charitably, trailers are often hastily and carelessly put together - even moreso than Eastwood films, I mean - and perhaps it's not that way in the finished film.

Outside of that, it's one firecracker of a trailer. I've gotten keyed up every time I've seen it in the theater. Hopefully the film follows suit and it's what the journalist behind the original story hopes it will be

Out of curiosity, what the locals' way of pronouncing the word? (Just in case I ever find myself in the southern USA and want to find a easy way to ingratiate myself to the locals.)

I can take guess that it's the shorter vowel sound in the first syllable.

I also note that it's Eastwood's first time working with Yves Bélanger as DoP. Looking at his bio, I see that he's done a lot of work with Xavier Dolan and can assume his work with Eastwood offered a vastly different on-set experience to the young Canadian director.

In all honesty when I think of Eastwood visuals aren't usually at the forefront although he's certainly had some striking images in his films (The Drifter riding in in High Plains Drifter, the hand in the water in Pale Rider and some establishing shots in Unforgiven.) and I imagine the gruff yet introverted Eastwood was quite a change from Dolan.

On a side note I'm unsure if this is coming on release date in my town so I'll be interested in what y'all have to say about this if you get the chance to go.

Eastwood actually has a surprising visual repertoire though it has gotten parsed a bit in recent years. Unforgiven has a number of split diopter effects for example.

The 3 basic southern pronunciations of "pecan":

(1) The standard "cracker" version (imagine as spoken by Strother Martin or Dub Taylor) with long, hard vowels:

"Pee-can"

(2) Modified standard version with short, soft vowels:

"Pe-can"

(3) The "upper crust" (pie allusion intended) "genteel society" version with soft "ah" sound:

"Pe-kahn"

Give that number 3 a long, hard "ah" and you may be mistaken for a damyankee.

I don't think I've ever hear number two used (I'm a one).
