I was wondering about the availability of Yugoslavian films on DVD. I understand that some can be found at http://www.yu4you.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Are there other outlets? Preferably with English subs, secondary Scandinavian languages or German.

There are also these sites:

Small Serbian Shop and DSS Sound.

Of course, there is considerable overlap with the selection at Yu4you, but there are some additional films - more often than not without English subtitles, though.

The Slovenian film Ples v dežju (Dancing in the Rain, 1961) is available on DVD in Slovenia, with English subs, but I don't think any of us ever found a site that would ship it internationally.

Also, Aleksandr Petrovic's It Rains in My Village was an unexpected release in the MGM burn-on-demand line last month. I assume it's in Serbian with English subtitles -- so far none of the few foreign films they've released have been English dubs. It also is or was available on Netflix Instant.

Both It Rains and Elio Petri's A Quiet Place in the Country have English dubs.

You know when you start doing a job and realise with a sinking feeling that it's going to take much longer than you expected? If I'd had any idea just how many of these DVDs would have English subtitles, I'd probably never have taken this on!

Anyway, this is a list of all the DVDs listed in the Small Serbian Shop website that claim to have English subtitles - though the only one I can personally vouch for is I Even Met Happy Gypsies (where they're rough and ready, but adequate), so double-check before ordering. Also note that some titles like Premeditated Murder come in two editions, only one of which has subtitles.

...and these films appear to be in English to start with:

Hermano (d. Giovanni Robbiano, 2007)
How Harry Became a Tree (d. Goran Paskaljević, 2001)
Zone of the Dead (Zona mrtvih, d. Milan Konjević, Milan Todorović, 2009)

Next question, of course, is how many of these are any good. I can certainly recommend Das Fräulein, The Fourth Man, I Even Met Happy Gypsies, Love Affair (though the latter is probably better served by the Eclipse edition) and Slovenian Girl, but I seem to remember that Seven and a Half had a few effective black-comedy moments but was a little too unpleasantly mean-spirited for my taste. Any others?

These two have English subtitles, and definitely worth picking up.

Was Yugoslavian film production primarily centered on Belgrade (Serbia today), or were there other production centers? Zagreb Film sounds familiar, though maybe that was primarily animation ... unless I'm mistaken.
I guess I'm wondering if film during that era was Serb dominated or more broadly representative.

Hm, my copy of The Wounds (Rane) hasn't English subtitles.

I want to mention Operation Titian (Operacija Ticijan), directed by Radoš Novaković, which has English soundtrack only.

This is one of the titles I mentioned above that exists in an ordinary edition and an international edition - the latter is fractionally more expensive, but has English and French subtitles (allegedly).

Rados Novakovic is a director I would really like to get to know better. He co-diredcted Blodveien (1955) with Kåre Bergstrøm, and I would like to see more of his descriptions of the occupation,as well as other Yugoslavian directors films about the WW2.

Zamfir's Zona (Zona Zamfirova, d. Zdravko Šotra, 2002)

Lisinski (Oktavijan Miletić, 1944)

A film about the life of composer Vatroslav Lisinski. There's a restored DVD available. I emailed Hrvatski državni arhiv about subtitles and they replied back that it is subtitled in English, French and German.

Hopefully I can manage to get a copy of this.

Karađorđe (Čiča Ilija Stanojević, 1911)

According to Wikipedia this is the first Serbian feature film and the first in the Balkans. There's some DVD available released by the Yugoslav Film Archive.

There's a nice selection of Slovenian films available at Video Art and Big Bang. The Slovenian Film Fund series (the ones with the red and blue cover layout) all have English subtitles.

Will they ship out of Slovenia? I shot them an e-mail since their website doesn't seem to have any info about international shipping. I have a feeling that if they will it's complicated since their website automatically offers me free shipping over 50 euros.

I placed an order with Video Art and went through the checkout with free shipping. A couple days later I received an email from them saying they normally ship via regular post, but in this case express mail was the only option. It was rather expensive (47 euros, sent via PayPal) but it was for a large order of 12 discs, and it did arrive in the US very quickly. I don't know if free shipping would have still been an option for a smaller order, and I haven't placed an order with Big Bang yet.

Anyone have any experience with the Hrvatski filmski savez/Croation Film Association? They have a selection of DVDs that looks really interesting. I've tried emailing the address at the bottom of the individual product pages to place an order, but no response so far.
