Wow, i'm impressed. It's been a long time since I last ordered from them, so maybe they've unknotted the kinks in their processing time. Nothing like impressive news to want to make me go spend money I don't have and see if it works for me too.tojoed wrote:Well, I ordered "Les Cousins" from Madman on March 2nd and it arrived at my address in the UK on March 7th. Yes, it did. The box could almost have contained the complete Chabrol.domino harvey wrote:Same here, only in America. Re: New R4 Australian Titles
FASSBINDER ON SOCIETY appears to be the first release by Madman to offer a choice of yellow or white subs All subsequent Fassbinder releases have them. The 2 reviews of the new Chabrols [see links below] have this choice as well so it could be new house rules for Madman.
The print of KATZLEMACHER is the same one used elsewhere [it comes from the Foundation] but what puzzles me is the fact that the subs on this disc alone are actually fixed (not even electonically sourced either). This is the first case of fixed subs I've come across on a Madman disc. [The other 2 films in this set: CHINESE ROULETTE & SATAN'S BREW have the optional yellow/white subs.]

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but what is the quality like on Madman's Godard dvds?

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
The Madman Godard's are the same transfers used in the UK. They are very good. The removable subs are white on VIVRE SA VIE & MASCULIN but (ugh) yellow on 2 OR 3 THINGS. The commentaries are excellent (as are all of Adrian Martin's). They are well researched and Martin doesn't ever let up throughout the films. [He does the same job on other Madmans like Wenders & Fassbinder.] There does not appear to be a trailer for VIVRE so, unless anyone else knows better, I would assume Godard never made one. Madman have there own version of one but its not on this disc.
I had never seen the early 80s films by the master but I agree that PASSION looks gorgeous.

I have just got There's Always Tomorrow from them, ordered 2nd April, arrived to UK 10th April so they do seem to be on the ball. Came in an enormous box, goodness knows why.david hare wrote:This is entirely anecdotal, but a friend with long standing and long delayed orders from ezydvd has started to see his backlog finally shipping. Evidently the new ownership of ezy is now sourcing form warehouses in Queensland (as against ezy's original South Australian base) so things are flowing again.

Do you mean from Madman? Because that's exactly what happened to me and Domino Harvey with "Les Cousins" (see above).Felix wrote:I have just got There's Always Tomorrow from them, ordered 2nd April, arrived to UK 10th April so they do seem to be on the ball. I saw those posts but this was from ezydvd, must be an Australian thing. I was making the point about them being back on the ball.tojoed wrote:Do you mean from Madman? Re: New R4 Australian Titles
Madman just released three of the Preminger Fox noirs, Fallen Angel, Whirlpool, and Where the Sidewalk Ends. Fallen Angel has an Adrian Martin commentary, so it might be worth picking up when it goes on sale, but I can't imagine any Australian who wanted these wouldn't just import the very cheap Fox Noir discs.

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
I picked up Madman's Chacun son cinema, one of the only releases of the film internationally. Some great short films by some great directors, good transfer, no extras beyond the trailer. Has anyone seen their recent Ministry of Fear? I'm hoping to pick up as many definitive R4 editions as I can while I'm still studying in Canberra, and more Lang is always a good thing. As long as the transfer is an improvement on the R2.
For that matter, any major R4 recommendations?

I was always baffled that the beautiful telecine of the Siodmak never made it to R1.. of course hands can be laid on it elsewise, but still...

Indeed. When labels get lazy, the Determined get busy.
Not familiar w the 400 Blows dealy. I guess to keep the threan on topic, I'll keep my eyes on the dvd's thread... but I can understand the frustration, since as an overseas buyer it's tough to get a replacement disc if there' a problem (is there one w the Truf?).. like the van Sant color seq.

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
Just picked up the local Sony edition of An Angel at My Table released this week - $14.95 if you don't mind!
Funny thing is - for $15 bucks - it's a direct port of the Criterion. The Criterion logo pops up, menus and special features, NTSC transfer, all the same. What a joy!

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
Beyond are releasing Pure Shit (1976) tomorrow as a three-disc (two DVDs + soundtrack CD) special edition.
I haven't seen it, and I get the impression that not very many people have since its first release.

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
Don't know if it has been mentioned already, however, was in JB today and bought for $9.99 a Universal-Rialto release of Lang's masterpiece You Only Live Once. Supplements include a Claude Chabrol doco on Lang. Will watch tonight and post review in the morning. I guess anything will be better than the clumsy Image print. A nice print would do the amazing b/w cinematography justice. This is one of my favorite Langs... so can't wait to lay down, with some nice wine and enjoy tonight.

Re: New R4 Australian Titles
Looking forward to the review since I didn't know there was a R4 release of the film but I already have the R2 Cinema Club DVD on the way from an order a few weeks ago. Up the page David Hare mentioned Ministry of Fear may have the same transfer as the Carlotta disc but is that confirmed? Adrian Martin provides a commentary on the Ministry of Fear disc as well.alandau wrote:Universal-Rialto release of Lang's masterpiece You Only Live Twice. Couldn't control myself. Quickly skimmed thru, to judge picture quality. Truly amazing! The Imagine can be thrown into the proverbial scrapheap. This new aussie print of You Only Live Once is brilliant.

I'm not familiar with Chabrol's Lang doc (or even knew it existed), can you give a rudimentary rundown of it? I know this film in particular was one of his favorites

Alandau, does the R4 YOLO have English subtitles? Thanks.
And David, I found a Region 4 "Tristana" available here.
