Didn't they confirm a Fellini was coming to Blu in January?

They answered my question that "8 1/2" would be a sure thing, but they never gave a time frame. Someone on this board assumed it would be released around January to coincide with the release of "9".

They said on Facebook a few weeks ago that a classic Fellini Blu announcement would be coming in "a month or so." Given that a Blu 8 1/2 is "certain," I'd count on it to come sooner than later.

8 1/2 Blu-ray would be a day one for me.

Thanks for the news!

regarding Andrei Rublev:
criterion wrote:Thanks for the advice. This is very complicated and from a film materials perspective, it's provoing to be even more difficult now than it was 15 years ago when we were working on the original laserdisc...

I would personally be willing to endure a two-year moratorium on all other releases if that's what it takes to put out a maxed out Rublev Blu.

Sorry, Criterion just gained the rights to American Pie 2 and American Wedding, and you can't expect them to just sit on those titles for a couple years

God, this company is really going to shit... if they aren't going to get the first film so they are able to release a Human Condition type box, why bother?

Would there be any reason for an SD reissue for 8 1/2?

Just Blu-ray. Hence the 8 1/2 blue dogs in the latest newsletter.

No... I know, I'm just not familiar with any potential minor upgrades a la the doc with Seventh Seal.

Anyone know where we can view past newsletters. I haven't been recieving any in the last three months. I've been blacklisted or something from Criterion.

If their schedule's so "jam packed", I don't foresee them wasting the time or money to improve on an already great SD package. I'd bet the whole kitten caboodle it will be a stand alone Blu-ray, I hope. Just so Juliet of the Spirits will get the full treatment. I'm sure that after losing Cabiria, Juliet moved to the front burner.

To Blu-ray or not to Blu-ray. That is the question.

Same here. I think I've received 1 since the website changed!

yeah, the current SD edition of 8 1/2 is fine. No need for an upgrade and rerelease of the SD. Would be nice to have an academic commentary though. Can't wait for the Blu.

Manhunter was just released on Blu-ray in a pack with the other two Hannibal Lector movies MGM owns, in what I've read is a great transfer (supposedly better than both the more recent films). Amazon says the last SD version was released just two years ago and it's still in print. With how few films MGM has kept in-print and how few they've released on Blu-ray, I think that one is probably unlikely to go to Criterion any time soon. Thief also appears to still be in-print and has a commentary, for what it's worth.

I couldn't find a list of MGM titles that have gone out of print either, but speaking about the few that I noticed have, I think a pair of spines for Blow Out and Dressed To Kill wouldn't be out of the question. Though I don't like paying >$30 for noirs, Kiss Me Deadly could be a good choice as well. MGM also has a bunch of Bergman films that seem like they might slowly be going OOP (Hour of the Wolf seems to be the only one that's out of stock everywhere at the moment). And, of course, there's Wild At Heart, which would be fantastic to see on Blu-ray.

I sort of like 'kitten caboodle', in a Billy Wilder accented sort of way. I had a german teacher years back who was also Austrian and similarly accented who would round off a demonstration with -

"Zere you arr, zere you haf itt, Bob iss your Uncle."

Criterion said on Facebook a few days ago that Blow Out is "not on the schedule at the moment."

The "kitten kaboodle" will be the next newsletter animal giving hints.
