Oh, I've seen that. It's the only tolerable usage of the song I can think of since it's for a kill scene.

Frank is coming from a pretty convoluted original idea, being written by the journalist Jon Ronson (Stanley Kubrick's Boxes, The Secret Rulers of the World, Kidneys For Jesus, and writer of The Men Who Stared At Goats) who was in a band with Chris Sievey who would go on to cult comedy success in the 1980s and 90s staying almost always in the character of Frank Sidebottom.

It is going to be interesting to see how they have made a film from that kind of character! It seems from the trailer that they have the musical ambitions idea going on at least!

We walked across Kentish Town Road so Chris could buy some cigarettes. He'd already given us his approval on the film and I told him the latest news. FilmFour wanted to fund its development. But – and Chris and I shuffled awkwardly around the question – what would the film actually be about? Specifically, Chris wondered, would Chris be in it? Chris had always said we could do what we wanted with the story. But he was worried that however the film might depict Chris, any reality would surely damage Frank.

I had similar concerns. Chris portrayed himself as untroubled. While a total dearth of anxiety was a fantastically enviable character trait in real life, how could we write a film about a man who just didn't care when everything went wrong and in fact found disaster funny? And if Chris was secretly more obsessive about Frank than he let on, how would he feel if the film reflected that? But there was a solution. What if we fictionalised the whole thing? It could be a fable instead of a biopic – a tribute to people like Frank who were just too fantastically strange to make it in the mainstream.

EDIT: 22nd September 2018: I was just reminded of this today by a couple of great videos just put out by the Retro Man Cave channel on YouTube, one about LPs releasing with tracks of software code, focusing on Seivey's 1983 album XL1 and a second video with the album playing in full as the Spectrum software playing, creating a kind of music video!

Saw Ida at BAM a couple of months ago. It's a film I definitely see being discussed at length as more members of the forum get to see it. There was a reality intertwined with artistry and narrative that I find rare.

I saw the show early in its B'way run and loved it. I think a majorit of this film's success will be dependent on how much you enjoy The Four Seasons music. The stage production didn't do anything wildly different from the last few major musical biographies released, but I think it took more pleasure in the music that film like 'Ray' or 'Walk the Line' just didn't have.

As a fan of "The Lookout" and Frank's screenplays, I'm glad he finally got to direct a second feature film. This looks like a promising thriller.
