When's the last time SC released a blu-ray?

I was just wondering about what was going on with new blurays coming from StudioCanal/Lionsgate and I see it's still just the same handful of titles. It seems like there's been a good amount of releases in the UK but even the official web sites has a promo for new titles for 2012 and their Facebook page hasn't been updated in over a year I think.

I can't imagine that Studiocanal is altogether satisfied with their releases in the US. I'd have to think that someone there would prefer their titles get on the shelves somehow (particularly from Criterion) than not at all.

Liongate and MGM ....both lions should be shot and skinned for the way they have treated the home video market!

MGM got much better. They now license titles to Criterion, Twilight Time, Kino Lorber, Shout Factory, most on blu. In UK, they license to Eureka and Arrow. They were also one of the first studios to have HD channel dedicated to their films

That is true that they do now license some of their movies to other companies and it is nice to see some of Woody Allen and even some Truffaut films on the HD channel so it is in the right direction.

True, but they still are in the doghouse for how they've treated John Wayne's The Alamo - which is in dire need of a restoration before it deteriorates completely, by the way. If they can step up and do that - or at least give it someone who will - then they can truly redeem themselves.

For Alamo, they're afraid to look like beggars, but needless to say nobody cares about how they look anymore. As you say, if they just step up and go beyond their own ego, they'll find out people would be much more positive about them as the guys who "finally admitted their difficult financial state and let [xxx] carry on what they couldn't finance for the sake of culture".

At least we are getting their catalog titles out through various companies. Kino is hot right now.

Pandora's Box.

I think both Pandora's Box and Golden Age of Television are just dropping the digipack for plastic cases on additional printings much like other titles that went "out of print" recently like Spirit of the Beehive and Night of the Hunter. Will probably be an ongoing trend.

Pandora's Box was rumored a while ago (along with Joan of Arc) as being forthcoming on Blu-ray.

It appears the '3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg' box is OOP.

A blu on the way?

If that were the case there would be no reason to put the DVD set OOP.

Perhaps they're going to shove everything in one of those 3 disc plastic cases.

This is licensed from Paramount, so there is no reason why it should be OOP-other than something minor- like between pressings/getting an upgrade etc. Still, I suppose someone can email Mulvaney and ask.

Also: Since this thread has become the catch-all for Criterion OOP news, can we drop the "StudiCanal" bit from the title?

October was when they upgraded an old DVD box to blu (Cassavettes). Possibly a sign of that?

Unsurprisingly StudioCanal is listed as one of the rights holders in the sell sheets for the Tati set. But does anybody know the deal for The Vanishing? The sell sheets indicate that StudioCanal is possibly the licensor for that film.

I really hope they've licensed it from SC. It'd be a sign of good things.

Easy answer: Not soon enough. ;~{

Their original pact dates back to 2006 and it was renewed in 2012, so I'd assume 2018.

HTF has press sheets up for the new annoucements.

Tati set and The Vanishing have Studiocanal logos. What's up with that? I understand SC's involvement in Tati collection but do they own The Vanishing? If so then how was Criterion able to license it?

It may be that, while Criterion/Janus have US distribution rights, StudioCanal owns the elements and/or made the HD transfer.

If that's the case, it might also explain how LA HAINE has survived for so long without being put OOP.

It still calls into question why Lionsagate has not released anything in the US from Studio Canal for what seems like years.
