I'm not a fan of Kelly's films and I actually don't even enjoy his personality based on the interviews I've read, but I don't see why Criterion shouldn't allow Kelly to provide them with a list of his 10 favorite Criterion Collection DVDs to place on their monthly newsletter.
Also, when did these lists start to come off as directors "hawking" their top ten DVDs? If someone asks me to provide a list of my favorite films and I comply, am I all of a sudden hawking these films?

So why all this ballyhoo and accusations of elitism?
How exactly is the previous paragraph not a demonstration of elitism? Following this same train of thought, magazines such as Film Comment and CinemaScope should be discarded for mentioning Godard and Tony Scott in the same issue (snarky comment in 3, 2, 1...) or making favorable comments about Richard Kelly and Hou Hsiao-hsien in the same paragraph.

Renoir must be turning over in his grave....
I think my point was that more than just Renoir oughtta be rolling over in their graves that only a handful of people are worthy enough to be watched.
I was actually agreeing with your point. I think that the sarcasm of my response to the sarcasm of your post must have somehow canceled each other out.

Something tells me this discussion is going to end up in the Infighting and Navel Gazing sub-forum.

Had I known my first comment would have created such a stir, I would not have posted it. It was just an opinion, guys. I'm sorry if offense has been caused to your delicate sensibilities.
And Antoine, please get a fucking hobby, because the Minutia Police thing, apparently, isn't working out very well.

Hey, it's better than Dickie Linklater or ::shiver:: Neil the Butt. Rian Johnson has at least made one good movie, and hasn't cast Ethan Hawke in anything he's done...

does anybody know where I can answer the trivia question?

Right here:
White Dog. Is this the first definite confirmation?
EDIT: I think I misunderstood your question! Is it the lack of a link you're asking about?

I was wondering about that, too. Does one simply hit "reply" to the original message, or is there another address to send the answer to?

Thanks. Its the second time I entered a Criterion contest and common sense would have been to include that email on the trivia.

Does anyone think this particular contest is US specific like the others? I'm assuming it is, but I'll kick myself if it isn't and I could have entered!

Enter anyway, and let them sort it out. They didn't even give us particulars on where to send our guesses, much less give any disclaimers!

From the homepage:
Criterion wrote:Eclipse Trivia Contest
Thanks to everyone for the enormous response to our most recent Eclipse trivia contest, included in this week's Eclipse newsletter, in which we asked you to name the Samuel Fuller movie deemed too controversial to release by its studio—and that was allegedly based on the true story of a pet once owned by Breathless star Jean Seberg. As many of you have pointed out, we forgot to tell you where to send your entries. Apologies. Here's where to send your answers:
[email protected]. Those with correct responses will be entered in a drawing, and one will be picked to receive a free Criterion DVD; two runners-up will receive Criterion T-shirts. Please have your entries in by September 14. We ship only to the U.S. and Canada. Sign up here to receive future Criterion and Eclipse newsletters.

Ricky Jay's wife has the same favorite film as David Mamet's wife. Coincidence?

Found this on another site but have yet to receive a newsletter, is this real or some fan made thing?

It's real. The
newsletter is on the Criterion site. Is the clue possibly for Salome? The current DVD is from Image and in print, but it fits the loincloth and Wilde references.

It has to be Cornel Wilde's
The Naked Prey.
Yet another title from the Paramount vault.

Correctamundo. I don't think it has ever been released in its correct 2.35 ratio in any format. This is worth celebrating for that reason alone, since its cinematography is the film's most redeeming asset. It's completely politically incorrect though, which is why I imagine Paramount wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.
