That they have, and maybe I'm not clear on UK copyright laws, but aren't those films both in public domain? Apologies if I misunderstand the situation.

In a word, no.

As a general rule, if the film is less than 70 years old and/or made by someone who died less than 70 years ago, it won't be in the public domain in Britain (or the EU) - so in practice it's very very rare indeed for a film made after 1937 to be genuinely public-domain according to current EU legislation.

There are a few exemptions to do with Crown Copyright and government-sponsored films, but this certainly won't apply in this case.

I was just looking for Pontecorvo's Burn and happened to notice that The Battle of Algiers seems to have gone out of print (or am I wrong)? It certainly fits with P and 1965, still hoping for Limite though.

Is it possible the MoC could release Masahiro Shinoda's "Yashagaike" aka "Demon Pond"? It's my favorite film of his, and they've released a few of his before...

If you go to wikipedia and look up the list of MoC releases, they have "The Blue Angel" listed at 25. Do they know something we don't?

The Blue Angel was once slated to be release #25 though I don't know what it's status is now or why Vampyr has been moved. I can only assume that The Blue Angel has been put on the back burner and MoC want to fill up all past catalogue nos to concentrate on the future. This would make sense in terms of the website (new release at the top rather than embedded). Either that or #50 is another Watkins or Visconti

Maybe 49 is now The Blue Angel, and 50 could be Saga of Anatahan?

That would be among the greatest things to happen ("Anatahan", I mean), but I'd thought that these round numbers like 50 or 100 would go to the greatest highlights in the collection. I'd assume "Der blaue Engel" is moved to 40 (would fit ideally after "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen"), and 50 now will be "Nibelungen".

I would love for Saga of Anatahan to get a DVD release and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it got one soon. It was recently restored and I was lucky enough to see it at the Cinematheque here a few weeks ago. The print was in great condition.

Assuming Johnny To would qualify as a director that is already part of the collection, it would be nice if 'T' + '1998' = Johnny To's A Hero Never Dies

I would need to be hospitalized for Incipient Joy if Peixoto's Limite came from MoC or CC.. or anybody decent for that matter. I'm tired of weeping with ecstacy over my cruddo copy... (god that score...)

Don't know which version you've seen, but some brief comments on the new resto of "Limite", as shown in Cannes last year and on arte TV a few weeks ago. The print is still in pretty bad condition, with one sequence missing entirely and some others having the worst instances of nitrate decomposition I think I ever saw. The rest is badly battered, too. If the film had lain around unhelped for some more years I'd say it would have been forever lost, at least parts of it. As to the music: this new resto follows the original plans as laid out by Peixoto, i.e. classical music by Debussy, Ravel, Satie and others. For the soundtrack, they tried to get recordings from the time, by Koussevitsky and others, so the sound is naturally 'bad' for the most part, but it fits the images completely.
A truly magnificent film clearly deserving to be released by MoC, but I'd say it would require a lot of courage for them to release it in the state it is and will forever be in, probably. Kino seems a more likely candidate, it would be a real highlight of an "Avantgarde Vol.3" set, for example.

Thats probably the one I have. I'm pretty familiar with the state of the film, the missing few feet, and the decomp section (Lyrical Nitrate will introduce you to Jackson Pollack style decomp far in advance of this). I'm just looking for hi def telecine without the chroma I saw. And contextual material as well.

And yes the original music is sublime-- my copy has all of it.

Absolutely true, I'd love to read a little bit more on that film (though the wikipedia entry is surprisingly comprehensive). But if I remember Nick's doubts about releasing "Vampyr" (which looks absolutely pristine compared to "Limite"), it probably needs even more effort at convincing him on our part. But at least he wouldn't have to fear a rival edition: this is the stuff that CC wouldn't even touch with a bargepole, considering the print condition.

Peerpee, can you throw us a bone and reveal one of these mysterious titles? Pretty please?

On Peixoto thisarticle is a good intro. Plus there is this website which I have not read. The snippets of music on the latter's site are indeed sublime. It makes me want to see the film even more. I am not aware of anything else that could be considered for on disc supplements, I imagine that there is more than a documentary or two out there, Peixoto seemed to have such an interesting life I find it hard to believe no one would have covered it.

T + 1974 = Shuji Terayama's Den-en ni shisu. Because more Japanese new wave can only be a good thing.

M + 1989 = Kira Muratova's Asthenic Syndrome. Looks wild enough for a blind-buy.

G + 1974 = Ritwik Ghatak's Jukti, Takko Aar Gappo. Saw a nice new print of this recently, if MOC could manage some decent subtitles it would be very nice (unless BFI have more Ghatak planned?)

G + 1997 + 1998 = Histoire Du Cinema. Does anyone really believe the AE version is coming soon?
