S'okay, they pretty much ignored my post regarding it being very likely announced for December several pages back. And the followup reminding them again. Glad to see at least I ended up having correct info.cdnchris wrote:And btw, in case anyone missed the post above, the Gimme Shelter Blu-ray is up on the site.

Um... wow. Gary Tooze just forwarded what appears to be this month's PR and it only lists the AK box, Gimme Shelter on Blu and A Christmas Tale.

I saw that too...at times Gary receives those ahead of the official announcements...I can't remember the last time nothing new came out in any particular month.Flike wrote:Um... wow. I received one, too, and that's all there is. The AK set, A Christmas Tale (DVD and Blu) and the Gimme Shelter Blu.

I just saw a placeholder for the AK box on the front page, but it's a broken image and the link goes nowhere.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Technically though, that's the most DVDs they ever will have released in a single month this year, and probably the second most they have ever released in a given month, after whatever month they released the 50 Years of Janus box. I have a feeling if we had only found out about the AK box today, and it didn't look like a ninja shoebox, and if it had included 25 Rivette films in it instead, people would be calling this like the best month ever.cdnchris wrote:I received one, too, and that's all there is. I'll still be disappointed not to see Stagecoach, which is what I was really looking forward to, especially with the December-specific clue.

You'd need a mighty big shoe box to fit 25 Rivette films in a single set.swo17 wrote: Technically though, that's the most DVDs they ever will have released in a single month this year, and probably the second most they have ever released in a given month, after whatever month they released the 50 Years of Janus box. Theoretically, could October 15th bring some more December titles, like Stagecoach or Che?

Those two are probably still waiting in line behind the "fall" releases of Rossellini's war trilogy and Cronos.

Wow, that was all very anticlimatic.
The elves at Criterion must be working overtime on the shoebox; it might explain why everything is getting pushed back, and the only additional title for December is a Blu-ray of a transfer (and package) that was previously done nine years ago.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
I suspect that Blu-ray case shortage (as well as replication lines being slammed right now through November) is why we're seeing so few new titles in December. They seem to be doing more dual DVD/BD releases, and they would of course want to release them the same day.
Of course, I may be totally off here, but it makes sense. If you can't get the product manufactured, you can't get solid/timely release dates.

I wouldn't automatically assume that Criterion are using the old transfer for Gimme Shelter. Not that it was that bad for 16mm.Tom Hagen wrote:Wow, that was all very anticlimatic.

Wasn't the DVD interlaced? I've been meaning to revisit it but I think I rember that being the case.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
I agree; I actually quite like the 2000 transfer, and though I am not a HD fetishist, I can't imagine improving too much on what they did last time (I do love 16mm in general though). I was just assuming that they are using the prior transfer because 1) the website specs haven't changed, 2) the old transfer was an HD transfer, and 3) that seems to be what they did with Monterey Pop.zedz wrote:I wouldn't automatically assume that Criterion are using the old transfer for Gimme Shelter. Now that is interesting.
I guess the "Other" tab now has some better purpose.
Kinda strange to see the titles slowly appear.

how do you know all of these will be CC releases? (would love to get Everlasting Moments...but how about The Emigrants/New Land?)marvinmeraz wrote:Wow, Criterion has been on the ball with contemporary releases. I hope they release Revanche and Che soon.
Anyway, here is a list of upcoming contemporary CC releases, I'm very excited:
Che - Part 1 and 2 - Steven Soderbergh (2008)
Cronos – Guillermo Del Toro (1993)
Everlasting Moments - Jan Troell (2008)
Following – Christophe Nolan (1998)
Gomorrah - Matteo Garrone (2008)
Revanche - Götz Spielmann (2008)
Secret of the Grain – Abdellatif Kechiche (2007)
Still Walking - Hirokazu Koreeda (2008)
Summer Hours - Olivier Assayas (2008)

They are showing Still Walking in the Los Angeles area, I might catch that. Super excited about Y Tu Mama Tambien.

IFC issued an offical press release about the Criterion deal. Just google "IFC to eat up 25% of Criterion's future release slate" and you should find it pretty easily.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
I just caught Resnais' Private Fears in Public Places on the IFC channel. Clearly the film is a masterpiece, but is there any chance this film will be released on Criterion? The film is on the IFC label and it appears that Criterion has a nice relationship with Resnais. Even getting a "Late Resnais" box set would be a treat. Maybe once The Wild Grass completes it's theatrical release, maybe an Eclipse set of Resnais' films from Smoking/No Smoking to The Wild Grass can be released.
This would make me unbelievably happy.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Total random speculation -
I was looking at the Castle Hll site. Obviously we know Criterion has a deal with titles from the Caidin trust...but I noticed another OOP title that would probably strongly appeal to Criterion, Glengarry Glen Ross.
http://www.castlehillproductions.com/g.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Lionsgate disc is out of print and Criterion certainly seems to be interested in Mamet...wouldn't be surprised if this ended up in the collection regardless of the Caidin deal. It's not connected to any other title in the Castle Hill library and seems to be a one-off. (It was independently produced and the production company was : GGR (har har) and the film is their only credit)
IMO.
