And don't seem to be able to find ANY Truffaut on their UK website either - seems bad news for Tirez sur le Pianiste which reaky was asking about back in 2005, dammit

Acording to Play.com "As Tears Go By" and "Days Of Being Wild" will be released as "dual language editions" (Mandarin/Cantonese) in late september.

Dunno about As Tears Go By, but the dual-language edition of Days of Being Wild was supposed to be out last month. By the time it comes out a year and nine months will have passed since the release of the Mandarin-only version. Just when Tartan had largely overcome their previous shitty reputation, too...

Thats going to be a big box.

Kinda crazy, wouldnt think many people would buy it.
Kinda like Mass production Bergman (30 identical units at reduced price!) for the masses (dont have to know or choose the ones you like!).
Kinda like the modern age we are forced to exist in.

Will the box have any films not available individually? e.g. will it have Sawdust and Tinsel or Face to Face?

DVD Times mentions the following:
Additionally, as an exclusive to the box set there are two previously unreleased titles, Dreams (1955) where a fashion editor and model both reflect on past lovers, and Farodokument '79, an affectionate tribute to the Faro islanders of his adopted home. A special Bergman booklet is also included.

NO NO! Not fair I say! These are 2 films that I've wanted to see for a LONG time, and I already own all of the other Tartan Bergmans :(

Shop-lifting is also an option. Professional lifters can be hired, here in Britain. Apparently. 8-[

hmm, are you suggesting i sell all of my discs now and buy the set or wait and hope someone splits the set up and sells these 2 titles on eBay... either way, it'll cost a big chunk of change #-o i wonder if hiring a professional shoplifter would be cheaper? 8-)

My guess is that after a sufficient hiatus Tartan will release the two exclusive-to-the-box films separately. Similar thing happened when Kino issued a Keaton box with material not available separately. It would not hurt for the forum members to write to Tartan protesting this strategy that penalizes their most loyal customers.

Looking at the DVD Times website it seems like there are going to be a lot of boxsets released soon, some with extra features as a little extra f-you to previous customers!

Apparently a Julio Medem boxset with The Red Squirrel and Vacas plus the previously unreleased Tierra is coming, to be followed by a second boxset of Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Sex and Lucia and Basque Ball later on.

A couple of documentary boxsets are coming, a music themed one of Dig!, End of the Century: The Ramones and The Devil and Daniel Johnston; and another one with Supersize Me, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price and Guerilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst.

A Wong Kar-Wai boxset of In The Mood For Love, Days Of Being Wild and As Tears Go By is also coming. Perhaps they didn't sell too well?

There is also going to be a Park Chan-Wook Vengeance Trilogy boxset, which is sure to annoy since it seems to have the Harry Knowles commentary that was strangely dropped from the previous Oldboy release and includes a commentar(ies) on Lady Vengeance as well as a the feature that fades the film to black and white as it is running. Quite a nice kick in the face for fans who bought the earlier releases. Why not spend a little extra time and do it right in the first place?

Apart from the two films only available in the box set, what really angers me is that they announce it as "The Complete Ingmar Bergman Box Set". It cannot be complete by any means, it will not even contain "Fanny and Alexander", as the UK rights for this one are with Artificial Eye. And probably also no "Sawdust and Tinsel" and "The Devils Eye" (unless they are going to release these in the near future). And given Tartan's knack of unearthing rare early Bergmans, I really had hoped that we finally would be able to see some of his TV films from the 90s, which I assume (judging from "Scenes from a marriage" and F&A) would be as worthwhile watching as all his other works. Announcing this as a complete set makes it probable that they consider their Bergman edition as done now, which would be really, really sad.

everything you say is correct but they cannot really call it:

"The Incomplete because we cannot get our hands on everything directed by Ingmar Bergman Box Set"

can they?

And then they get annoyed and angry when people make their own burnt copy and can't understand how on earth folks can be so ungrateful. What do they expect treating consumers like this

(I don't say it's ok to burn copies, just that I sometimes can understand if people choose to do it)

Of course not. But they could simply have called it "The Tartan Ingmar Bergman Collection Box". And still I can't see why if they get all these really obscure early Bergmans there's still no "Sawdust and Tinsel" :-(

If a company knows there is market demand for a film and which they can make profit on, there is typically 2 reasons why its not yet on DVD.

[1]legal issues
[2]no good print/source materials currently available.

these 2 reasons or some combination thereof cover all the possible reasons why a certain film is not yet released on DVD.

about sawdust and tinsel. it is not made for the same company SF (Svensk filmindustri) as almost all other Bergman films. This is made for Sandrews. but the same goes fro Dreams and sionce they will release that one i really can't se any reason why they don't release Sawdust and Tinsel. Both Dreams and Sawdust is released in sweden (without english subtitles).

more about the bergman box

looks really nice to me!

Wow, I didn't know Bergman directed Torque. Not one of his best, but it's nice to see him branching out into genre films after all these years. If I ever meet him, remind me to ask him what it was like to work with Ice Cube.
