Kinugasa definitely re-edited this significantly. The original was indeed unusual due to the lack of title cards -- but it was certainly a radically different (and less mysterious) experience with constant benshi explanations of what was going on. The images, of course, would have been no less striking. Aaron Gerow's book on this would be the definitive source to consult for details.
