A September release sounds about right being that Turner Classic Movies is showing it on July 28th overnight at 2 a.m. (E.T.).
"Beehive" is already available in the U.K. which is why I was hoping for the inclusion of "El Sur" on the Criterion edition.
If any filmmaker's entire oeuvre could be represented in an entire box set, Victor Erice would be the ideal choice. Oh well!

The awesome train arrives in September.
We already know that a commentary is in the works for this release. I can't wait.

Is this a definite? Any clue who?

This link says "Dr. Linda Ehrlich, associate professor at Case and author of the book An Open Window: The Cinema of Victor Erice" is doing the commentary on the DVD release but doesn't specifically cite Criterion as releasing it.

It appears that Linda Ehrlich's participation was reduced to an interview instead of a commentary track.

The specs list:
Interview with film scholar Linda Ehrlich
...unlikely that she would now do a commentary on top of that. Sounds as if a commentary was discussed, and an i/v opted for. Being a slow moving mood piece, probably makes the film unsuitable for a running shot by shot, scene by scene commentary... Rather let the images and sounds speak for themselves, and then present a separate critical essay/interview.

Not only is Spirit of the Beehive coming out in september but if you were to look at the "September" topic The Seven Samurai, Amarcord, Brazil, and Jigoku are all being released in that month in new editions....Can that be right?......it's hard to belive that Criterion would release so many great films in one month!......

Good point...there's a contradiction here, in any case. Image Entertainment's website lists the release as a single disc set, with a retail of $39.95. Either the interview is, indeed, an interview and the release is actually a double disc set, or Criterion will correct Image's specs, and specify this as a commentary.

I apologize GIGIMONAGAS....i did not read or hear anything about a release date on Playtime.....
So does this mean that Playtime, The Seven Samurai, Spirit of the Beehive, Amarcord, Brazil, and Jigoku are coming out in September?

It's just very unusual for Criterion to release so many classic films in one month....all the titles i have when they were first released except for The Spirit of the Beehive and Jigoku. With all new transfers and more extras they are worth double dipping....

Just to put this issue to bed,
Linda Ehrlich's online CV now lists
Taped interview, Spirit of the Beehive, Criterion DVD

....Very Nice!....I have not seen a picture or anything on the director himself so the documentary on him and the film will be a nice treat!!

This might just be the release of the year for me. I've been waiting for this movie in R1 for years now and am sooooooooooooo happy Criterion is releasing it (and not Kino, New Yorker, or Image). The extra features look promising too. I can't wait until Sept.

$39.95 for 1 disc set with no commentary? oh well.

They should drop the documentary and bring the price down to 29.95

Is probably a 2-diser like Elevator to the Gallows, or Harakiri.

Well, it's got a documentary plus three interviews of an indeterminate length. And It's likely that at least the Ehrlich one with be substantial if she was at one point slated for a commentary.
